Chapter 46 - The Fortress of Broken Dolls

The ferry terminal was an ancient timber and corrugated-iron compound jutting out into a deep-water cove. The gate had been smashed open, iron hinges twisted like pretzels.

David crashed his battered Suburban through the timber barricades, coming to a halt twenty yards from the primary loading dock. Steam hissed violently from his radiator; the front axle groaned as it settled onto the crushed gravel.

He stepped out into the freezing wind, Kimber in hand, extra magazines clicked into his belt.

The dock was eerily quiet, save for the howling wind and the metallic slap of mooring cables against wood. A large, sixty-foot commercial high-speed catamaran was tied to the slip, its twin diesel engines idling with a low, bone-vibrating thrum.

The black Mercedes sat abandoned on the pier, its driver-side door swinging open in the gale. The driver lay sprawled on the wet timber, a single bullet wound between his shoulder blades.

Evelyn was cleaning up her own tracks. She didn't leave witnesses. Not even her own hired guns.

David approached the boat, step by cautious step, using the cargo crates for cover. The scent of burning ozone and sweet, cloying lavender perfume drifted through the sleet.

Suddenly, the harbor’s high-intensity industrial work lamps flickered on, bathing the slip in a blinding, white glare.

David raised his forearm to shield his eyes.

"Drop the gun, David."

Standing on the upper sundeck of the catamaran, forty feet away, was Evelyn Vance.

She wore a long white fur-trimmed coat that whipped in the wind like angel wings. In her left arm, she cradled Maya, wrapped tightly in a thick cashmere travel blanket. The baby was crying, the high-pitched, helpless wails carrying over the roar of the engines.

In Evelyn’s right hand was a compact, matte-black detonator with a glowing red LED light.

"One click, darling," Evelyn shouted over the storm, pointing her chin toward the lower passenger cabin of the boat. "I’ve lined the fuel tanks with twenty pounds of military-grade C4. If you take one step onto that gangway, we all go into the lake together. A glorious, fiery funeral pyre for the Vance family."

David’s heart stopped. He lowered the barrel of his gun toward the ground, his voice cracking with desperation. "Let her go, Evelyn! It's me you hate! It's Arthur you hated! She's an infant! She has nothing to do with this!"

"She has EVERYTHING to do with this!" Evelyn screamed, her aristocratic composure completely shattering, revealing the foaming, ravenous monster beneath. "Arthur tried to cut me out! He thought he could buy you from a dead whore and raise you to despise me! But blood is nothing! Nurture is EVERYTHING! I built you! I broke your spirit so you would survive in this world, and you betrayed me for that common, pathetic girl in Duluth!"

She looked down at Maya's face, her fingers caressing the baby’s forehead with chilling tenderness. "This one will be different. She will never know another mother. She will never hear the name Leah. She will be raised in Geneva, in castles of glass and gold, and she will revere me as a goddess."

May you like

"She will know you're a monster," David said, stepping forward, his eyes locked on the detonator. "Just like I know."
