Chapter 36 - The Drowned Girl

The rain hammered against the tin roof above like a volley of stones.
"What girl?" David asked, his knuckles aching inside his pocket.
Arthur leaned against the rusted hull of the generator, the ember of his cigarette glowing in the darkness. "Her name was Sarah Holloway. The only daughter of billionaire shipping magnate Thomas Holloway. When Thomas died without an adult heir, his estate was placed into a blind trust that could only be liquidated by a verified direct descendant carrying his family’s rare genetic marker—a specific micro-deletion on chromosome seven."
David froze.
*Chromosome seven.*
He remembered the pediatrician’s confused expression during Maya’s three-month checkup in Chicago. *“It’s harmless, Mr. Vance, just an extraordinarily rare deletion on the long arm of chromosome seven. Usually only seen in families tracing back to a tiny fishing enclave in Nova Scotia.”*
"Evelyn was the governess for the Holloway family in the late eighties," Arthur continued, his voice heavy with ancient shame. "She knew about the trust. When Thomas died, Evelyn tried to take the child. She wanted to raise Sarah as her own collateral. But the girl ran. One winter night at the lake house, Sarah slipped out onto the frozen lake. Evelyn chased her. The ice broke."
Arthur paused, closing his eyes as if the memory were playing directly against his retinas.
"I heard the scream. I ran out onto the dock, but Evelyn was already standing over the hole. She held the broken ice down with an iron paddle. When I tried to dive in, she looked at me and said, 'If you go in after her, Arthur, you drown with her. And who will take care of David?'"
Arthur’s face twisted in agony. "You were four years old, David. You were sleeping in the cabin. I was a coward. I let the ice close over that child. We weighed her body down with iron chains and sank her in forty feet of water."
"Then how is Maya connected?!" David roared, stepping forward until the barrel of his gun was six inches from Arthur’s chest. "Maya is Leah’s daughter! My daughter!"
"Sarah Holloway didn't die without a trace," Arthur whispered. "Before Evelyn sank her, she had Dr. Ross harvest Sarah’s ovarian tissue and freeze it. Evelyn spent thirty years trying to breed a viable heir to claim that Holloway estate. Julian was a failure—the genetic marker didn't take. But Leah?"
Arthur looked at David with terrifying clarity.
"Where do you think Leah came from, David? Her parents died in an unexplained house fire when she was three. She grew up in foster homes funded entirely by anonymous charitable grants from an Illinois foundation. A foundation owned by Evelyn Vance."
David’s breath stopped. The ground seemed to tilt beneath his boots.
"No," David choked out. "No, that's impossible. Leah met me by accident in college—"

"There are no accidents in Evelyn's orbit," Arthur said grimly. "She engineered your meeting. She orchestrated your marriage. She waited twenty-five years for you to put a child inside a woman who carried Sarah Holloway’s exact bloodline. Maya is the living key to forty million dollars. And now that Evelyn is facing life behind bars, she doesn't care about playing the loving mother anymore. She's cashing out."
