Chapter 7 - Thirty-Eight WeeksThe storm came at night.

Rain hammered against the windows.
Thunder rolled over the neighborhood.
At exactly thirty-eight weeks and two days, David woke to Leah gripping his arm.
"David."
Her voice was barely audible.
"My water broke."
He sat up.
Then he saw the blood.
Everything inside him stopped.
Leah cried out as another contraction seized her body.
"We have to go."
David grabbed the hospital bag.
They rushed downstairs.
Rain blurred the windshield as David started the car.
Leah was breathing rapidly.
"She's coming too soon."
"We're going to make it."
David tried to sound confident.
He wasn't.
He drove through the storm.
Then he looked into the rearview mirror.
Headlights.
A dark sedan.
Too close.
He changed lanes.
The sedan followed.
His heart stopped.
He knew that car.
"She's behind us."
Leah turned toward the window.
"No."
The sedan moved closer.
His mother had been waiting.
Waiting for the exact moment they were vulnerable.
Waiting for the moment they had no choice but to leave their fortress.

David pressed the accelerator.
The nightmare had followed them onto the road.
