Chapter 38 - Tea with the Lord

The private members' club in Mayfair exuded old-world British elegance, with dark mahogany paneling, leather armchairs, and the faint aroma of fine cigars and aged whiskey.

Lord Alistair Vance—a silver-haired, impeccably dressed aristocrat in his late fifties—sat in a high-backed leather chair, nursing a glass of port as Claire Whitmore walked into the private parlor. She walked with the effortless poise of a queen, her presence instantly dominating the room.

Alistair didn't stand up. Instead, he offered a patronizing, condescending smile. "Ah, the American corporate interloper. I must say, Ms. Whitmore, you have quite a reputation for crashing parties you weren't invited to."

Claire didn't blink. She smoothly pulled out the opposite chair, sitting down without waiting for an invitation. "And you, Lord Vance, have quite a reputation for hiding illegal contraband behind centuries of aristocratic privilege."

Alistair’s patronizing smile vanished instantly, replaced by a flash of genuine alarm. He leaned forward, lowering his voice. "What did you say?"

Claire slid a slim manila folder across the mahogany table, opening it to reveal itemized customs evasion logs, offshore banking transfers, and forged shipping manifests.

"Your docklands project requires immediate parliamentary zoning approval," Claire said calmly, her voice dropping into a dangerous, measured register. "Approval that you can either grant willingly by tomorrow morning, or I can forward these documents directly to Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs and the Serious Fraud Office. You’ll be trading your parliamentary seat for a prison cell before the weekend."

Alistair stared at the documents, his face turning pale as he realized he had completely underestimated the woman sitting across from him. He had thought her an easy target; instead, he had walked straight into a buzzsaw.

"You're a merciless creature," Alistair whispered, his voice trembling slightly.

"I’m a survivor," Claire corrected softly, standing up and smoothing her jacket. "And in London, the Whitmore name is no longer negotiable. You have until nine o'clock tomorrow to sign the zoning transfer."
