Chapter 25 - Fire and Steel in the Atrium

The lobby of Whitmore Tower transformed into a war zone as heavy tactical gunfire shattered the pristine floor-to-ceiling glass facade. Shards of crystal rained down like diamonds across the marble floors as four heavily armed Vanguard operatives advanced past the reception desk, smoke grenades billowing thick, choking gray clouds through the cavernous space.
From the mezzanine level overlooking the atrium, Claire stood unflinching, her tailored blazer rustling slightly as she held a secure tactical radio. She wasn't hiding behind desks anymore; she was directing the chess pieces.
"Sector Two, advance and pin them against the elevator bank," Claire instructed calmly into her comms mic, her voice carrying absolute authority. "Do not let them reach the subterranean stairwell."
Two elite private security operatives stationed on the upper walkway responded instantly, laying down suppressive fire that forced the Vanguard mercenaries to scramble for cover behind marble structural pillars.
Down in the subterranean server room, Natalie let out a triumphant gasp as the mainframe screen flashed from blazing red to soothing corporate blue.
Access Granted. Mainframe Secured.
"Got you," Natalie whispered, slamming her hand down on the physical kill-switch that locked out all external network access. The encrypted data of Project Janus was now safely isolated within an air-gapped sandbox, completely shielded from the Vanguard’s digital purge.
Suddenly, the heavy steel door behind her shuddered under a massive concussive blast.
Boom!
The pneumatic hinges buckled as a mercenary kicked the damaged door wide open, smoke rolling into the server room as a towering figure stepped through, leveling an assault rifle straight at Natalie’s chest.
"End of the line, Ms. Vance," the operative sneered beneath his tactical balaclava.
May you like
Natalie didn't flinch. She simply smiled. "You should have checked the room's environmental controls."
With a swift keystroke, Natalie triggered the automated Halon fire-suppression override. Within a fraction of a second, oxygen was violently sucked out of the server room, replaced by an inert suppression gas. The mercenary gasped, dropping his weapon as his lungs seized up, collapsing hard onto the tile floor in a dead faint.
