Chapter 9 - The Vase on the Table

Ten o'clock in the morning sunlight flooded the grand living room of Suite 904. The atmosphere was light, purposeful, and filled with a renewed sense of corporate and personal clarity.
Arthur Harrison had stepped back down to the lobby to oversee the morning shift transition, leaving Clara and Lupita finishing their coffee by the window.
Suddenly, the door to the master bedroom clicked open, and soft, pattering footsteps echoed across the parquet floor.
"Mommy?"
Clara turned around immediately with a bright, radiant smile. Lily stood in the doorway, rubbing her sleepy eyes with one hand while clutching the worn, gray stuffed rabbit—Barnaby—tightly in the other. She was wearing her favorite yellow pajamas with little white clouds printed all over them.
"Good morning, my sweet angel," Clara said, opening her arms wide.
Lily let out a happy little gasp and ran across the room as fast as her small legs could carry her, crashing directly into Clara’s lap. Clara scooped her up, burying her face in Lily’s soft hair, breathing in the sweet scent of morning sleep and strawberry pancakes.
"Did you sleep well, baby?" Clara asked softly, kissing the top of Lily’s head.
"I had the best sleep ever," Lily mumbled, burying her face in her mother's neck before pulling back and noticing Lupita standing nearby in her sharp new blazer. Lily tilted her head, her big blue eyes blinking curiously. "Hi. Who are you?"
Lupita smiled warmly, kneeling down to Lily’s eye level. "Hello, sweet girl. My name is Lupita. I work here at the hotel. And I brought you something very special from the kitchen."
Lily’s eyes lit up instantly. "Pancakes?"
"The biggest, fluffiest chocolate-chip pancakes with fresh strawberries you’ve ever seen," Lupita laughed softly, pointing toward the dining cart near the sofa where a warm silver dome covered a massive plate of breakfast treats.
Lily clapped her hands together in delight. "Can I eat them now, Mommy?"
"Of course you can, sweetheart," Clara smiled, setting her daughter down gently at the dining table.
As Lily eagerly dug into her breakfast, her attention drifted across the table toward the center centerpiece. Sitting proudly in a heavy crystal bowl filled with fresh water were the red roses Clara had bought yesterday—their bruised stems trimmed, their rich velvet petals fully open and glowing brilliantly in the morning sunlight.
"Look, Mommy!" Lily pointed a sticky little finger at the vase. "The roses are so pretty! We found the best vase for them!"
Clara looked from the bright, beautiful flowers to Lupita, who was smiling warmly beside her, and then down at her happy, laughing daughter.

Tomorrow was the anniversary of David’s passing. The grief would always be there, a quiet shadow waiting in the background. But looking around this room—surrounded by warmth, strength, and the people who truly mattered—Clara knew deep in her soul that they were going to be more than okay.
They were home.
