Chapter 2 - The Audit Begins

The silence that followed Patrick’s panicked whisper was heavy enough to crush glass. The soft jazz playing from the lobby piano bar suddenly felt miles away, drowned out by the thunderous pounding of blood in the two receptionists' ears. Patrick stared at the glowing monitor as if it were about to detonate, while Karl’s mouth opened and closed like a fish stranded on a dry dock.

"S-Suite 904?" Karl stammered, his eyes darting frantically between Patrick and the exhausted woman standing before them. "That... that's impossible. That suite isn't even listed on the public booking portal. It's blocked off for... for corporate VIPs. For the board members."

"It’s blocked off for the owner," Lupita supplied quietly, a tiny, knowing smile playing at the corners of her lips as she adjusted the stack of fresh towels in her arms. She didn't say another word, but her eyes held a brilliant, fierce light of vindication.

Clara didn't blink. She maintained direct, unyielding eye contact with Patrick, whose hands were now shaking so violently he had to grip the edge of the mahogany desk to keep them steady.

"You asked me earlier if I wanted to look for a cheaper motel down the road, Patrick," Clara said, her voice smooth, controlled, and utterly terrifying in its calmness. "Tell me, do your standard motels come with private elevator access and a direct line to corporate compliance?"

Patrick swallowed hard, his throat dry as sandpaper. "Ma'am... Mrs. Vance... I—I had no idea. The system update... sometimes the regional servers don't—"

"Spare me," Clara cut him off instantly, holding up a single finger. "You didn't look at the system. You looked at my jacket. You looked at my tired face, my daughter’s sleeping form, and these bruised flowers, and you made a snap judgment that anyone who doesn't arrive in a custom-tailored Brioni suit isn't worthy of stepping foot inside your lobby. Is that the standard of hospitality taught during your training?"

Karl stepped forward, his defensive instincts overriding his panic. "Now wait just a minute, Mrs. Vance—nobody could have known! You walked in looking like... well, you didn't look like a corporate executive! In this business, we have to deal with transients and people trying to sneak past security all the time. We were just doing our jobs to protect the hotel's guests and property!"

"Protect the property?" Clara’s eyes flashed with sharp intelligence. "By turning away the legal owner and founder of the entire hospitality group while she’s holding a sleeping six-year-old child? By telling a grieving mother on the anniversary eve of her husband’s death to go sleep on a highway bench?"

Patrick felt the floor drop out from under him. The name Vance—it finally clicked in his terror-stricken brain. He had memorized the corporate org chart during his onboarding seminar six months ago, but the face on the intranet profile picture had been taken under studio lighting, wearing a sharp blazer, with her hair professionally blown out. She didn't look like the CEO right now; she looked like an exhausted mother carrying the weight of the world. And he had just told her to get out.

"Mrs. Vance, please," Patrick choked out, his voice cracking pathetically. "Please, don't report this to HR. It’s my first year here, I have student loans, I—I have a family—"

"Your family relies on your income, Patrick, yet you showed zero empathy for mine," Clara replied coldly. She slid her phone across the marble counter, its screen dark and dead from the flight. "Lupita."

"Yes, Mrs. Vance?" Lupita stepped forward immediately.

"Please take this phone, plug it into the service charger in the back office, and dial General Manager Harrison. Tell him to meet me in Suite 904 in exactly fifteen minutes. Also, ask him to bring the master personnel files for the front-desk staff on duty tonight."

"Right away, ma'am," Lupita said, taking the phone with a respectful nod. As she turned toward the back office, she cast a brief, pitying glance back at Patrick and Karl.

"Mrs. Vance, please!" Karl pleaded, panic finally breaking through his arrogant facade. "You can't ruin our careers over a simple misunderstanding! We’ll lose everything!"

"You didn't just misunderstand a booking, Karl," Clara said softly, her voice dropping an octave as she adjusted Lily’s weight, feeling her daughter stir slightly against her chest. "You abused your power against someone you thought had no voice, no status, and no protection. That is the one thing I have zero tolerance for in any hotel bearing my family's name."

May you like

Without another word, Clara turned her back on the front desk. She didn't look back. She walked toward the private elevator bank reserved for executive suites, her faded leather jacket rustling softly in the quiet lobby.

Behind her, the two men stood frozen in absolute terror, knowing that their glittering careers in luxury hospitality had just evaporated into thin air.
