Chapter 5 - The Fall of the Gatekeepers

Down in the grand lobby of the Grand Regent Hotel, the atmosphere had shifted from tense anxiety to absolute, frozen shock.
Patrick and Karl were still standing behind the mahogany reception desk, their faces pale and sweating despite the cool air conditioning. They had been whispering frantically back and forth, trying to concoct some narrative about a "system glitch" or a "misunderstood security protocol," when the private elevator chimed.
General Manager Arthur Harrison stepped out into the lobby. His expression was no longer the polite, accommodating facade he wore for wealthy patrons. It was a mask of cold, unyielding executive fury. Flanking him were two massive hotel security guards in sharp black uniforms, their arms crossed over their broad chests.
Arthur walked straight up to the front desk, his leather shoes clicking sharply against the marble floor.
Patrick forced a nervous, shaky laugh as Arthur approached. "Ah, Mr. Harrison! Look, we were just explaining to corporate—there was a massive data propagation delay with the Seattle server, and Mrs. Vance’s reservation—"
"Save your breath, Patrick," Arthur interrupted, his voice cutting through the lobby like a razor blade. He slapped two manila folders down on the counter. "Your employment with the Vance Hospitality Group is terminated effective immediately."
Karl’s jaw dropped. "Terminated?! Are you out of your mind? You can't fire us without a formal hearing! We followed standard security protocols for unannounced walk-ins! That woman looked like a transient!"
"That woman," Arthur said, leaning forward until his face was inches from Karl’s, "is Clara Vance. The founder, majority shareholder, and CEO of this entire corporation. And you didn't just turn away a guest—you violated the core ethical charter of every property bearing her family's name."
The words hit Patrick like a physical blow. His knees buckled slightly, and he caught himself on the edge of the desk. "The... the CEO? But... but her jacket... she had a dead tablet... she was carrying flowers..."
"She was mourning her late husband on the anniversary eve of his passing, and she wanted a quiet place to rest with her sleeping child," Arthur snapped. "Instead of showing basic human decency, you treated her with arrogance, contempt, and discrimination."
Arthur gestured to the two security guards. "Escort them off the property immediately. Have their lockers cleared out and their final paychecks withheld pending a complete legal review of their conduct during their tenure."
"You can't do this!" Karl shouted, his face turning crimson as the security guards stepped forward, grabbing him firmly by the upper arms. "This is completely illegal! I’ll sue the hotel! I’ll sue you!"
"You are welcome to try," Arthur replied coldly as the guards physically hauled Karl and a whimpering, paralyzed Patrick away from the desk, dragging their belongings behind them. "Though I wouldn't recommend taking on Vance corporate legal counsel. They haven't lost a case in fifteen years."
As the heavy glass doors swung open, casting the two disgraced employees out into the freezing Chicago night, the lobby fell into a profound, respectful silence.
Arthur adjusted his glasses, turned around, and spotted Lupita standing near the luggage cart where she had left her stack of towels earlier. She was watching the scene with quiet, dignified composure.

Arthur walked over to her, his expression softening into one of deep respect.
"Lupita," Arthur said gently. "Mrs. Vance requests your presence in Suite 904 right now."
