Chapter 6 - The Ascent to the Penthouse

Lupita blinked in surprise, her hands smoothing down the front of her maroon housekeeping vest. "In Suite 904? Right now, Mr. Harrison? But my shift ended twenty minutes ago, and—"

"Your shift just evolved, Lupita," Arthur interrupted with a warm, approving smile. He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a freshly printed, heavy cardstock document bearing the official gold-embossed seal of the Vance Hospitality Group. "Before you go up, take a look at this."

Lupita wiped her hands nervously on her apron before taking the paper. Her eyes scanned the bold text at the top: OFFICIAL APPOINTMENT OF EXECUTIVE PROMOTION.

Name: Lupita Morales.

Position: Director of Guest Relations and Operational Compliance – Chicago Flagship.

Effective Date: Immediate.

Compensation Adjustment: Reflecting Executive Leadership Grade IV.

Lupita’s breath hitched. She stared at the paper, her eyes widening in sheer disbelief as she read the numbers and the title. "Mr. Harrison... I don't... this must be a mistake. I’m a lead floor housekeeper. I don't have a college degree in hotel management. I just... I just clean rooms and help out where I’m needed."

"You do a lot more than clean rooms, Lupita," Arthur said softly, placing a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "You remind us what hospitality actually means. Mrs. Vance herself ordered this promotion. She watched the security footage of what happened tonight, and she made it very clear: she wants the person who guards the soul of this hotel sitting at the executive table."

Tears welled up in Lupita’s dark eyes, spilling over her weathered cheeks as she clutched the document tightly against her chest. After fifteen years of scrubbing floors, folding endless piles of crisp white sheets, and working double shifts to put her youngest son through community college, nobody had ever truly seen her. Nobody had ever recognized the quiet, steady pillar of strength she had been for this hotel.

"Thank you," Lupita whispered, her voice thick with emotion. "Thank you, Mr. Harrison. And please... please tell Mrs. Vance I am deeply honored."

"You can tell her yourself," Arthur smiled, gesturing toward the private executive elevator bank. "She’s waiting for you upstairs in the penthouse."

A few moments later, Lupita stepped out of the private elevator onto the ninth floor, her heart beating a steady, joyful rhythm against her ribs. She walked down the plush corridor to Suite 904, her hand trembling slightly as she raised her knuckles and tapped twice on the heavy oak door.

The door swung open instantly.

Clara Vance stood in the doorway. She was no longer wearing her scuffed backpack or her travel-weary expression. Though she still wore her faded leather jacket, her posture was regal, her eyes shining with genuine warmth and respect.

"Lupita," Clara smiled, stepping forward and opening her arms. "Come in. Please, come in."
