Chapter 4 - The Midnight Summons

Arthur Harrison blinked, adjusting his wire-rimmed glasses as he looked across the coffee table at his employer. "Lupita? What does this have to do with Lupita, Mrs. Vance?"

"Everything," Clara said, standing up and walking over to the floor-to-ceiling window to gaze out at the glowing lights of Michigan Avenue. "While your front desk staff were busy playing gatekeepers and humiliating guests based on their appearance, a woman making minimum wage in the housekeeping department showed more leadership, empathy, and operational awareness than both of them combined."

Arthur nodded thoughtfully. "Lupita Morales has been with us for fifteen years, Mrs. Vance. She started as a room attendant back when this property was acquired. She knows the building inside and out, and our guests on the upper floors routinely request her by name because of her exceptional attention to detail."

"Fifteen years," Clara repeated softly, turning back around. "And what is her current position?"

"Lead Floor Housekeeper for the executive wing," Arthur replied.

"Not anymore," Clara said firmly. "As of tonight, Lupita’s job title changes. I want her promoted to Director of Guest Relations and Operational Compliance for the entire Chicago flagship property."

Arthur’s eyes widened in genuine surprise, though a slow, approving smile began to form on his lips. "That... that is an extraordinary promotion, Mrs. Vance. But given her dedication, it is entirely deserved. The current Director of Guest Relations retired last month, and we’ve been struggling to find someone who actually understands the human element of our business rather than just corporate metrics."

"Lupita embodies everything this company was founded on," Clara said, walking back toward the sofa and picking up the bruised bouquet of red roses. She gently straightened one of the bent stems with her thumb. "David and I started this company with the belief that a luxury hotel should feel like a sanctuary, not an exclusive country club designed to keep people out. Lupita understands that instinctively."

"I will have HR draft the promotion paperwork immediately," Arthur said, pulling out a sleek digital stylus from his pocket. "It will be ready for her signature by eight o'clock tomorrow morning."

"No," Clara corrected smoothly. "Not tomorrow morning. Right now."

Arthur blinked in surprise. "Right now? It’s nearly midnight, Mrs. Vance."

"Exactly. People who change the culture of a company don't punch a clock, Arthur. Have security escort Patrick and Karl off the property immediately, effective immediately, with zero severance pay for gross policy violation. And then, have Lupita brought up to Suite 904."

Arthur didn't hesitate for a second. He stood up straight, buttoned his suit jacket, and gave a crisp, professional nod. "Consider it done, Mrs. Vance. I’ll handle the termination personally in the lobby, and then I’ll escort Lupita upstairs."

"Thank you, Arthur."

As the general manager hurried out of the suite, closing the heavy oak door softly behind him, Clara walked back into the master bedroom. Lily was still fast asleep, her breathing deep and even, one small hand clutching the worn stuffed rabbit against her chest.

Clara sat down on the edge of the mattress, gently pulling the blanket up higher around her daughter’s shoulders. She leaned down and kissed Lily’s forehead, lingering there for a long moment as a single, silent tear slipped down her cheek.

"We’re okay, sweet girl," Clara whispered into the quiet dark of the room. "Daddy would be proud. We’re taking care of everything."

Outside, the Chicago wind howled against the reinforced glass of the penthouse windows, but inside, the storm had finally settled.
