Chapter 10 - MAYA'S GUILTMaya arrived at Sophia's apartment the next morning.

Her eyes were red.
“Sophia.”
Sophia opened the door.
Maya immediately hugged her.
“I'm so sorry.”
Sophia held her tightly.
“For what?”
“For asking you to help.”
Sophia stepped back.
“Maya, you didn't make Richard hit me.”
“I know, but—”
“No.”
Sophia looked directly at her.
“You didn't do anything wrong.”
Maya swallowed.
“I heard what happened.”
Sophia nodded.
“The hotel has opened an investigation.”
Maya looked worried.
“Are you going to press charges?”
Sophia hesitated.
“I've spoken to a lawyer. I'm considering my options.”
Maya nodded.
Then whispered:
“I should've warned you about Richard.”
Sophia frowned.
“What do you mean?”
Maya looked away.
“He's treated other employees badly.”
Sophia's expression changed.
“How badly?”
Maya hesitated.
“Threats. Humiliation. Cutting shifts when people complained.”
Sophia went still.
“Why didn't anyone report him?”
Maya looked ashamed.
“Some did.”
“And?”
“Nothing changed.”
Sophia's eyes hardened.
