Chapter 3 - WHY SHE WAS WAITING TABLESSophia Bennett had never intended to work in a restaurant that night.

Her closest friend, Maya Collins, had called her that morning.

Maya was twenty-nine.

A hardworking restaurant server who had supported Sophia during the most difficult years of her life.

They'd met when Sophia was a struggling fashion student.

Maya worked nights at a café.

Sophia worked mornings at a clothing store.

They shared a tiny apartment.

Shared groceries.

Shared worries.

And celebrated every small victory.

When Sophia launched her first anonymous collection, Maya had helped package the orders.

When the first major buyer called, Maya cried harder than Sophia did.

Now Maya was working at an upscale Manhattan restaurant.

And she was desperate.

A colleague had called in sick.

The restaurant was understaffed.

Maya had promised to cover the shift but needed someone experienced to help.

Sophia had worked in restaurants before.

She agreed.

Just one evening.

Maya had laughed.

“Are you seriously going to wear a waitress uniform?”

Sophia smiled.

“Why not?”

“Because you're AVERY.”

Sophia shook her head.

“Tonight, I'm just Sophia.”

Maya grinned.

“Then don't let the rich customers scare you.”

Sophia laughed.

“Never.”

Neither woman imagined what would happen before the night was over.
