Chapter 9 - THE AFTERMATH IN SILK

The penthouse of Clara's Manhattan high-rise was a sanctuary of modern minimalism, a stark contrast to the heavy, oppressive antiquity of the Sterling-Hayes world. Three days had passed since the wedding that ended in handcuffs.

Clara stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking out over the city lights, holding a mug of black coffee. The bruise on her cheek had faded to a dull, yellowish shadow, easily covered by makeup, but she hadn't bothered to hide it. It was a badge of survival.

The media storm had been apocalyptic. Page Six, the Wall Street Journal, and every gossip blog in the country had exploded with the story. "THE BILLION-DOLLAR BRIDE'S REVENGE" was the headline slapped across the tabloids. The details of Julian's assault, Felix's gambling debts, and the devastating prenup had been leaked—courtesy of Victoria’s highly strategic PR team.

Victoria walked into the living room, tossing a thick stack of manila folders onto the glass coffee table. She looked exhausted but triumphant.

"It's done," Victoria announced, pouring herself a generous measure of scotch. "The ink is dry. The Hamptons estate, the townhouse on the Upper East Side, and the holding company are now fully and legally under your name."

Clara turned away from the window. "Did they fight it?"

"They tried," Victoria smirked. "Eleanor hired a bulldog lawyer, tried to claim you signed the prenup under duress. But the moment the prosecutor played the video of Julian slapping you, the judge threw it out. The Morality Clause held up perfectly. They have absolutely nothing left."

Clara walked over to the coffee table and opened the top folder. There it was. The deed to the Hamptons estate, the very place where she had discovered Julian's betrayal. The place where generations of Sterling-Hayes men had smoked cigars and squandered their fortunes.

"What about Julian?" Clara asked, her voice devoid of pity.

"Denied bail," Victoria said, taking a sip of scotch. "Because of Felix's connections to the Volkov syndicate, Julian is considered a flight risk. He's sitting in a holding cell at Rikers. And Felix is cooperating with the feds, singing like a canary to avoid a twenty-year sentence."

Clara closed the folder. The victory was absolute. The surgical precision with which she had destroyed them was terrifying even to herself. But as she sat on her white leather sofa, the adrenaline finally began to recede, leaving a profound, hollow exhaustion in its wake.

She had won the war, but she had still lost the illusion of the man she loved.

"Are you okay, Clara?" Victoria asked, her sharp tone softening for the first time in months.

Clara looked at the city lights. "I'm mourning the ghost of a man who never existed, Victoria. But I'll survive. I always do."
