Chapter 1 - THE ILLUSION OF WHITE SILK

The ballroom of the Waldorf Astoria was a masterclass in opulent deception. Ten thousand white orchids cascaded from crystal chandeliers, their sweet, heavy scent masking the quiet rot underneath the celebration. Clara stood at the edge of the grand staircase, the heavy silk of her custom Vera Wang gown pooling around her like frosted glass. To the two hundred guests sipping vintage Dom Pérignon below, she was the picture of a triumphant bride. She was Clara Vance, the billionaire tech heiress, finally marrying into the old-money aristocracy of the Sterling-Hayes family.
Her groom, Julian, stood by the ice sculpture, laughing with a group of senators. He looked like a prince pulled directly from a fairy tale: tall, devastatingly handsome, with a jawline that could cut glass and a smile that had disarmed Clara from the moment they met. But as Clara watched him, the fairy tale dissolved. The man holding the champagne flute wasn't a prince. He was a highly trained actor, playing the role of a lifetime.
Hovering near Julian was his mother, Eleanor. She wore a silver gown that looked more like armor, her sharp eyes scanning the room, calculating the net worth of every guest. Eleanor was the matriarch of a dying dynasty. The Sterling-Hayes name opened every door in high society, but their bank accounts had been bleeding dry for a decade. Clara was their life raft. Or rather, Clara’s bank accounts were.
Clara took a deep breath, adjusting the diamond tennis bracelet on her wrist. Her heart didn't flutter with the nervous excitement of a new bride. Instead, it beat with the slow, steady rhythm of a soldier preparing for a siege. The hardest part of today hadn't been walking down the aisle. It hadn't been looking into Julian’s lying eyes and saying "I do."
The hardest part was the waiting.
She caught the eye of a woman standing in the far corner of the room. The woman was dressed in a sharp, unforgiving black suit, entirely out of place among the pastels and tuxedos. It was Clara's attorney, Victoria Vance—no relation, just a shared affinity for absolute dominance. Victoria gave Clara a barely perceptible nod. The pieces were in place.
"Smile, darling," a cold voice hissed in Clara's ear. Eleanor had materialized beside her, her perfectly manicured fingers digging into Clara's bicep just hard enough to bruise. "You look stiff. We have investors from Geneva watching."
Clara turned to her new mother-in-law, her expression unreadable. "I'm just taking it all in, Eleanor. Every single detail."

Eleanor offered a patronizing smile. "Well, don't take too long. It's almost time to cut the cake, and then we have family business to attend to. Real family business."
Clara watched the older woman glide away. Family business. Clara knew exactly what that meant. The trap had been set months ago, and tonight, the jaws were finally going to snap shut. But Eleanor had miscalculated one crucial detail: who was the predator, and who was the prey.
