Chapter 8 - THE WALK OF SHAME

As the deputies began to march Julian toward the exit, Eleanor completely lost her mind. The aristocratic matriarch shrieked, clawing at the officers, demanding they release her son.

"He's a Sterling-Hayes! You can't touch him! Do you know who I am?!" she screamed, her silver gown tearing slightly at the seam.

"We know exactly who you are, ma'am," the deputy replied dryly, blocking her path. "And you'll need to step back before we arrest you for obstructing justice."

The guests parted, creating a wide, humiliating aisle for Julian to walk down. The same aisle Clara had walked down just an hour earlier to the soaring notes of a wedding march. Now, the only soundtrack was the frantic clicking of smartphone cameras as the guests recorded the spectacular downfall of the golden boy.

Julian kept his head down, tears of pure terror and humiliation streaming down his face. He was being paraded in handcuffs past senators, CEOs, and socialites. He was ruined. No country club would accept him, no bank would lend to him, no elite circle would ever let him in again.

Clara stood by the ruined wedding cake, her posture perfect. She didn't look away. She watched every agonizing second of his walk of shame.

Victoria stepped up beside her. "The transfer of the deeds will be complete by tomorrow morning," she murmured. "Felix was picked up by the FBI at JFK airport ten minutes ago trying to board a flight to Dubai."

Clara nodded slowly. "And Eleanor?"

"Bankrupt," Victoria stated. "Without the trust, she can't afford the maintenance on her lifestyle for another month. She'll be selling her jewelry by Tuesday."

Clara reached down and picked up her torn lace veil from the floor. She didn't put it back on her head; she simply held it in her hand. The symbol of her innocence, discarded.

She turned to the stunned crowd of two hundred guests. "Ladies and gentlemen," Clara announced, her voice clear and resonant. "The wedding is obviously canceled. However, the champagne is paid for, and the catering is exceptional. Please, enjoy the rest of the evening."

With that, Clara turned her back on the ballroom, flanked by Victoria and the remaining officers, and walked out of the Waldorf Astoria, leaving the ruins of the Sterling-Hayes family burning behind her.
