Chapter 11 - THE GHOSTS OF THE PAST

Winter descended on New York, bringing a blanket of snow that quieted the relentless noise of the city. Clara’s life had settled into a new, powerful rhythm. Her tech company's stock had surged following the highly publicized launch of the Vance Foundation. The public loved a survivor, especially one who turned her revenge into philanthropy.

But the past rarely stays buried without a fight.

It was a Tuesday evening when Victoria called Clara’s private line.

"We have a slight complication," Victoria said, her tone all business. "Julian's criminal defense attorney has reached out. Julian is begging for a plea deal on the fraud charges. In exchange, he's threatening to release 'private' communications between the two of you to the press. Attempting to paint you as the manipulative mastermind who entrapped him."

Clara stopped reviewing the quarterly reports on her tablet. A cold, familiar anger sparked in her chest. Even from a jail cell, Julian was trying to control the narrative.

"What kind of communications?" Clara asked.

"Old emails, love letters, heavily edited voice notes," Victoria scoffed. "Nothing legally damaging, but it's a nuisance. He wants to muddy your reputation. He's asking for you to drop the civil suits related to the embezzlement so he can get a reduced sentence."

Clara walked over to her window. The snow was falling heavily over Central Park. Julian was a drowning man trying to pull her underwater with him.

"He thinks I'm still the woman who cares what the Upper East Side thinks of her," Clara murmured.

"How do you want to play it?" Victoria asked. "We can hit him with a gag order, bury him in injunctions."

"No," Clara said, a sharp, dangerous smile playing on her lips. "Don't block him. Let him talk."

Victoria paused. "Are you sure? It could get messy."

"Julian is a pathological liar, Victoria. If we try to silence him, it looks like we have something to hide. Let him release his little edited voice notes. Because the moment he does, I want you to release the unedited, full audio of his conversations with Felix. The ones where they explicitly plot to steal my trust fund and laugh about my 'naivety'."

Victoria let out a low, appreciative laugh. "Nuclear option. I like it."

"He wanted a war," Clara said coldly. "Let's make sure he understands he lost it."
