Chapter 7 - The Reckoning

My Former Husband Smirked After Leaving Me Until A Little Girl Called His Boss Dad

The metallic click of the handcuffs closing around Gavin’s wrists was the loudest sound in the room.

He didn’t fight. He didn’t yell. As the agents pulled his arms behind him and led him toward the door, he looked shrunken, stripped of the tailored facade that had masked his emptiness for so long. As he passed Julian in the doorway, Gavin raised his head one last time, his voice a pathetic rasp.

“You think this is over, Vance? You think you can build your harbor over my family’s history?”

Julian didn’t even flinch. He looked down at Gavin with the calm indifference of a man stepping over a fallen twig on a forest path.

“Your family’s history ended the day you forged your first signature, Albright,” Julian replied quietly. “And as for the harbor... construction begins on Monday. On land that belongs entirely to my wife.”

The agents escorted Gavin out into the corridor, where two local police officers were waiting to escort him down to the courthouse holding cells. The door clicked shut, leaving Nora, Julian, and Arthur Davies in the quiet office.

Arthur let out a long sigh, taking off his glasses to polish them with a silk handkerchief. “The U.S. Attorney expects an indictment by tomorrow afternoon. Wire fraud, bank fraud, forgery of official state records, and aggravated identity theft. Given the paper trail Brenda provided, he won’t be granted bail.”

“And Brenda?” Nora asked, turning toward the attorney.

“Her cooperation will be taken into account,” Arthur said. “She’ll likely face probation and substantial financial restitution to your father’s estate, but she won’t serve federal time. Her family has already hired independent counsel to oversee the liquidation of Albright Holdings’ remaining assets.”

Nora walked over to the desk, looking down at the scattered papers, the cold coffee cups, and the half-empty glass of Scotch. It was the pathetic remnants of a man who had built his life on mirrors and smoke, terrified that anyone would look close enough to see the hollow center.

Julian came to her side, gently taking her hand. “Come on. Let’s go home.”

They walked out of the building into the bright Gulfport sunshine. The air was warm, smelling of salt water and diesel fuel from the nearby docks. Nora took a deep, cleansing breath, feeling the breeze against her face. For five years, she hadn’t realized how much tension she had carried in her shoulders, how much lingering self-doubt Gavin’s callous words had left behind.

In his final moments at the wedding, Gavin had tried to strike one last blow, whispering that leaving her was the best decision he had ever made. He had wanted to leave a scar that would ache for the rest of her life.

Instead, his arrogance had triggered the chain of events that had finally exposed his crimes, cleared her father’s beloved name, and permanently severed the last thread connecting her to her past.

They drove back to Ocean Springs in the golden warmth of late afternoon.

When they arrived at their house, Clara—Nora’s cousin whose wedding they had attended the night before—was sitting on the front porch swing with Maisie, who was happily reading a picture book aloud.

Seeing their car pull up, Maisie dropped the book and came bounding across the green lawn, her sundress fluttering in the wind.

“Mommy! Daddy!” she shouted, throwing her small arms around Nora’s waist just as she had done in the ballroom the previous evening.

Nora scooped her daughter up into her arms, burying her face in Maisie’s hair, smelling the sweet scent of sunshine and baby shampoo. Maisie wrapped her arms tightly around Nora’s neck, giggling as Julian joined them, wrapping his broad arms around both of them in a warm, protective embrace.

“Did you beat the bad guys, Daddy?” Maisie asked innocently, looking at Julian with wide, curious eyes.

May you like

Julian smiled, his face radiant with love, and kissed Maisie’s cheek before looking directly into Nora’s eyes.

“No, sweetheart,” Julian said softly. “Your mommy did.”
