Chapter 14 - The Unspoken Vow

They didn't speak of it inside the house.
For the next two hours, Nora and Julian moved through the evening routine with practiced gentleness. Maisie ate her dinner, chatter bubbling up about the baby heron she had seen near the bridge and how she wanted to paint a giant mural on the side of the boathouse next weekend. Julian sat beside her, smiling, cutting her chicken into neat pieces, laughing at her jokes, and listening with the patient, wholehearted devotion that had made Nora fall in love with him in the first place.
When Maisie was tucked beneath her floral quilt, her arms wrapped around her stuffed pelican, she looked up at Julian with sleepy eyes.
"Daddy?"
"Yes, baby?"
"We get to stay here forever, right? With Mommy and the birds?"
Julian leaned down, resting his forehead against hers. "This is our home, Maisie. Nobody is ever going to take you away from here. I promise you that on my life."
Once Maisie’s breathing slowed into the steady rhythm of deep sleep, Julian softly closed the door. He walked down the pine-paneled hallway into the study, where the architectural blueprints of the sanctuary were laid out across the drafting table.
Nora was already there, holding two cups of black coffee. She set one on the desk and stood opposite him, leaning against the edge of the wood.
"Tell me everything, Julian. No secrets. If we're fighting for our daughter on Monday morning, I need to know every weapon they have."
Julian sat down in the heavy leather chair, rubbing his face with his hands. When he looked up, the weariness of years was etched into his features.
"Before Maisie was born, when Clara was first diagnosed, Richard Hayes approached me with a proposal. The Vance family owned a controlling interest in a shipping freight line out of New Orleans. Richard wanted to leverage Clara’s trust to take over the company. I refused. I told him Clara’s money was meant for her care and for our child’s future."
Julian took a sip of the bitter coffee, his gaze unfocused. "Richard didn't take no for an answer. He forged Clara’s authorization on an initial loan agreement. When Clara found out, the shock nearly put her in the hospital early. She threatened to go to the federal authorities. To protect his son from prison, Arthur Vance stepped in. He bought out Richard's debt, forced him into exile in Europe, and demanded that Clara sign a complete non-disclosure agreement to protect the Vance family name."
"And Clara signed it?" Nora asked.
"She signed an agreement to keep Richard out of federal prison, yes," Julian said. "In exchange, Arthur promised they would leave us in peace. But three days before Clara passed away, Richard returned to New Orleans in secret. He came to the hospital. He tried to get her to sign an amended trust document that would revert her entire estate to the Vance family trust if I ever remarried or liquidated our maritime assets."
Nora’s eyes widened. "The codicil."
"Clara told him to burn in hell," Julian said, his jaw tightening. "She ripped the papers in half right in front of him. I threw Richard out of the room. Security escorted him off the premises. That was the last time I ever saw him."

"Then how does Gavin have a signed copy?" Nora pressed. "How could a forensic examiner verify her signature?"
Julian looked up at Nora, the truth hitting him like a physical blow. "Because Richard didn't bring one copy that night. He brought two. And Clara didn't rip up the original."
