Chapter 19 - The Truth in Black and White

Monday morning arrived with brilliant, washed-clean skies. The Gulf breeze carried the fresh, sharp scent of salt and pine, blowing away every trace of the weekend storm.
In the Gulfport Federal Courthouse, Courtroom 4B was quiet.
Arthur Vance sat at the plaintiff’s table, flanked by three high-priced attorneys from Boston. He was an imposing man with silver hair, cold grey eyes, and the posture of an aristocrat who believed laws were suggestions written for lesser people. He hadn't even looked at Julian or Nora when they entered the room.
The presiding judge, an elderly woman named Judge Clara Holloway with a reputation for zero tolerance for legal theatrics, adjusted her glasses and looked down from the bench.
"Mr. Vance," Judge Holloway began, her voice dry as parchment. "Your counsel has filed an emergency motion for the immediate custodial transfer of Maisie Sterling, citing an unrecorded codicil and allegations of trust fund diversion."
Arthur Vance stood up, nodding gracefully. "That is correct, Your Honor. We seek only to protect our late daughter Clara’s legacy and ensure her child is raised with the educational and financial security she deserves."
"A touching sentiment, Mr. Vance," Julian’s lead counsel, Marcus Holloway, said as he rose to his feet. "Except for one minor detail. The Vance Family Maritime Trust, from which this supposed authority derives, was legally nullified thirty minutes ago."
Arthur Vance’s lead attorney scoffed. "That trust is chartered under Massachusetts law! A Mississippi court has no jurisdiction—"
"It is chartered using assets derived from the Vance Basin land patent of 1974," Marcus interrupted smoothly, walking forward and placing a thick leather-bound binder on the judge’s bench. "A patent that was obtained through documented fraud against the Department of the Interior. We have submitted the original 1968 federal boundary survey, recovered from the Miller estate in Ocean Springs, bearing the seal of the United States Surveyor General."
The color visibly drained from Arthur Vance’s face. He turned a furious, questioning glare toward his lead attorney, who suddenly looked frantic.
"Furthermore," Marcus continued, his voice ringing through the silent courtroom, "we have submitted a certified deposition from Mr. Gavin Albright, taken late yesterday afternoon at the Harrison County Adult Detention Center. In exchange for prosecutorial leniency on his state charges, Mr. Albright has fully confessed to assisting Richard Hayes in manufacturing a forged codicil using digital signature transfers from Clara Vance’s 2017 hospital intake documents."
Arthur Vance slammed his hand on the mahogany table. "That's an outrage! That man is a criminal!"
"He is," Judge Holloway snapped, banging her gavel with a crack that silenced the room. "And so, it appears, is your nephew Richard, who is currently being detained by federal marshals at Logan International Airport in Boston."
The courtroom fell completely dead.
Judge Holloway looked down at the documents before her, then peered over her glasses directly at Arthur Vance.
"Mr. Vance, this court finds that this emergency petition was filed in bad faith, predicated on fabricated evidence, and intended solely to harass a devoted father and his family. Not only is your petition for custody denied with extreme prejudice, but I am forwarding these files to the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Mississippi for immediate criminal indictments regarding interstate fraud and perjury."
She struck the gavel down. "Court is adjourned."
Arthur Vance didn't speak. He stood frozen, his empire unraveling around him in an instant, before his attorneys quickly ushered him out the side door to avoid the reporters waiting in the corridor.
Julian turned to Nora. In the quiet of the empty courtroom, he pulled her into his arms, burying his face in her hair. She felt his body let go of a breath he had been holding for years.

"It's over," Nora whispered, holding him with all the strength in her heart. "Our family is safe."
"Because of you," Julian murmured, his voice thick with raw emotion. "Because you fought for us."
