Chapter 23 - The Whispering Phone

By two in the morning, the woman had been settled into the far corner suite of the ground floor—a secure room once used for visiting estate trustees, far removed from the private living quarters upstairs.

Nora sat on the edge of the master bed, her hands clasped tightly in her lap. Julian stood by the open balcony doors, staring out into the pitch-black canopy of the coastal oaks. The silence between them was heavier than any argument they had ever had.

"Do you believe her?" Nora asked softly.

Julian ran both hands through his hair, his shoulders slumping under an impossible weight. "The locket was real, Nora. The engraving was done by a small jeweler on King Street who died three years ago. There are no records of that inscription anywhere. Clara kept that locket in her vanity drawer until the day we boarded the boat."

"Jewelry can be stolen, Julian. People who drown can be robbed by salvage divers."

"And her face?" Julian turned, his eyes bloodshot, haunted. "The scar near her temple? The way she said my name? It’s Clara. God help me, it looks like her, sounds like her, smells like her. But..."

"But what?" Nora asked, standing up and stepping close to him.

"When I looked into her eyes tonight," Julian whispered, pain cracking his composure, "I didn't feel the warmth I remembered. I felt cold. Like looking at a stranger wearing my dead wife's clothes."

"Trust that feeling," Nora said, cupping his face in her hands. "Don't let guilt blind your instincts. We protect Maisie first. Everything else comes second."

Julian leaned his forehead against hers, breathing in the scent of jasmine and paint from her hair. "I swear to you, Nora. You and Maisie are my life now. Nothing will tear that apart."

At four in the morning, unable to sleep, Nora slipped downstairs in her woolen robe to fetch a glass of water. The grand house was shrouded in eerie quiet, save for the hum of the air circulation and the distant rustle of marsh grass.

As she passed the kitchen mudroom, where the woman’s damp vintage canvas bag had been hung over a coat peg, a faint, rhythmic blue glow caught her eye.

Nora stopped.

Deep inside the side pocket of the canvas bag, a small mobile screen was illuminating the coarse fabric. It wasn't the cheap prepaid flip phone the woman had placed on the table earlier.

Nora walked on silent bare feet to the coat rack. Holding her breath, she reached into the canvas pocket and slid out a high-end encrypted smartphone.

The lock screen was glowing. A notification banner from a secure messaging app flashed in white text:

**UNKNOWN:** *Has he agreed to custody access yet? The trust filings are ready for the morning. Don't slip up, Evelyn.*

Nora stared at the screen, her heart slamming violently against her ribs.

*Evelyn.*

Before Nora could memorize the phone number, a sudden shadow fell across the mudroom floorboards.

"Looking for something, Nora?"

May you like

Nora spun around. The woman was standing in the doorway, barefoot, clad in a guest robe, her grey-green eyes completely devoid of warmth, fixed on Nora with the deadly focus of a viper.
