Chapter 20 - The Midnight Arrival

That evening, the Ocean Springs sanctuary was filled with music and laughter.

A dozen families had gathered on the lawn beneath the lanterns strung between the live oaks. The children were running in circles chasing fireflies, their laughter echoing across the still waters of the bayou. Maisie was at the center of the crowd, wearing a yellow sundress, proudly showing her friends the massive wooden easel Julian had built for her that afternoon.

Nora stood near the edge of the water, holding a glass of iced tea, watching her daughter.

Julian stepped up behind her, sliding his arms around her waist, resting his chin against her temple.

"What are you thinking about?" he asked gently.

"About how strange life is," Nora smiled, leaning back against his chest. "A year ago, I was terrified that Gavin’s shadow would follow me forever. I thought the damage he did had permanently broken my ability to trust."

"And now?"

Nora turned in his arms, smiling up into the eyes of the man who had become her home. "Now, I know that shadows only exist when there's light nearby. And we have more than enough light."

Julian smiled, leaning down to kiss her—a deep, tender promise sealed against the falling night.

By ten o'clock, the guests had gone. Maisie was fast asleep in her bed, completely exhausted from a day of running in the sunshine, her little hands curled peacefully under her pillow.

Nora and Julian sat in the living room, the French doors open to let in the cool evening breeze. Nora was working on a small canvas on her lap, while Julian reviewed the sanctuary’s new educational grant proposals.

The quiet was complete, beautiful, and hard-earned.

Then, down at the front gate, the security chime rang.

Julian frowned, looking at the wall-mounted monitor. "That's strange. The main gate should be locked for the night."

He stood up, walking over to the control panel by the kitchen. He tapped the touchscreen to bring up the camera feed from the entrance drive.

A solitary figure was standing outside the iron gate.

It wasn't a car. It wasn't a lawyer or a police cruiser.

It was a woman, wearing a worn traveler’s coat, carrying a small vintage canvas bag. She was drenched in the sea mist, standing motionless under the yellow glow of the security lantern, staring directly into the camera lens.

Julian went rigid. His breath caught in his throat with a sharp, ragged sound.

"Julian?" Nora asked, setting her paintbrush down, alarmed by the sudden, terrifying stillness in his posture. "What is it? Who’s out there?"

Julian didn't answer. He couldn't speak.

Nora walked quickly across the room to his side and looked at the screen.

The woman on the camera raised her hand slowly, reaching up to push back the damp hood of her coat, revealing a face with high cheekbones, delicate features, and familiar, haunting grey-green eyes.

Around her neck hung an antique silver locket—the exact duplicate of the one Maisie wore around her neck every single day.

The woman looked straight into the camera, her lips moving as she spoke words that the outdoor microphone carried into the silent kitchen:

*"Julian... please open the gate. Clara is coming home."*
