Chapter 6 - Lily Saw More Than Anyone Knew
Lily had seen Rachel before dinner.
That was how the truth broke open.
She had gone looking for crayons near the back hall.
The storage room door opened a few inches.
Rachel whispered her name.
Lily thought she was dreaming.
Rachel told her quietly:
“Find Daddy.”
Before Lily could move, Vanessa appeared.
She shut the door.
Then she noticed Lily standing there.
Vanessa crouched.
“Mommy is sick. She needs to be alone.”
Lily did not believe her.
Vanessa put the brass key in her dress pocket.
During dinner, Lily stole it.
She did not know what it unlocked.
