Chapter 29 - The Secret Beneath The Custody Papers

The county jail visiting room smelled of stale disinfectant, damp concrete, and sour fear.

Daniel sat on a molded plastic chair behind a thick pane of scratched polycarbonate glass. Across from him, the steel door buzzed loudly, and a corrections officer escorted Vanessa into the room.

She was wearing a standard orange jumpsuit that swallowed her narrow frame. The glamorous facade was gone. Her blonde hair was pulled back in a tangled, unwashed ponytail, and the expensive chemical peel on her face had given way to sallow, graying skin. But the malice in her blue eyes was still intact—bright, venomous, and arrogant.

She sat down, picked up the heavy plastic telephone receiver on her side, and pressed it against her ear.

Daniel picked up his receiver.

“Did you get my package, Daniel?” she said, her lips curving into a grotesque imitation of the seductive smile she used to give him across the breakfast table. “Did you enjoy the home movies?”

Daniel leaned forward against the cold metal ledge. “Arthur Vance isn’t going to post your bail, Vanessa.”

The smirk on Vanessa’s face faltered for a fraction of a second, then snapped back. “Arthur has handled my representation. My preliminary hearing is Friday. His associates filed a motion for dismissal based on illegal search and seizure. That storage room key you found in the teddy bear? Inadmissible. Cole’s confession? Coerced without counsel. I’ll be sleeping in a four-star hotel by the weekend, darling.”

Daniel laughed—a dry, humorless sound that echoed through the receiver.

“Do you know what was inside that package you had couriered to my house?” Daniel asked softly.

“A reminder of what you failed to see,” she sneered.

“No,” Daniel replied. “It was Arthur Vance’s insurance policy. He didn’t just send me a video of you gloating in front of Rachel. He sent me the raw file from the camera. Do you know what raw digital video files contain, Vanessa? Metadata. GPS coordinates. And audio tracks that your cheap little camcorder recorded before you hit the main power switch.”

Vanessa’s eyes widened slightly. Her grip on the plastic receiver tightened until her knuckles turned ivory.

“He wanted you to send that tape to me,” Daniel whispered, his tone terrifyingly calm. “He knew that if I panicked, I’d take Rachel and Lily and flee the jurisdiction. And if the victims flee, the state’s key witnesses aren’t available for trial. But more importantly… he wanted me to know you were the primary conspirator. He’s cutting you loose, Vanessa.”

“You’re lying,” she snapped, her voice rising into a sharp, grating hiss. “Arthur needs me! I have the signed custody transfers! I have the offshore trust authorization Rachel signed!”

“Rachel didn’t sign the authorization,” Daniel said plainly. “She signed a power of attorney that was already expired. The document is legally worthless. Cole didn’t know the difference, and neither did you. But Arthur knew. Arthur knew the moment the police raided the house that the game was over.”

Daniel reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a folded sheet of printed paper. He pressed it flat against the polycarbonate glass.

It was a copy of a probate court filing stamped at 4:30 PM yesterday afternoon.

“Arthur Vance filed a motion to intervene as the sole legal conservator of the Vance-Greyson Trust,” Daniel explained, pointing to the official court seal. “In paragraph twelve, he names you as an unvetted rogue contractor who defrauded his legal firm. He’s turning state’s evidence, Vanessa. In exchange for immunity, he’s testifying that you and Cole broke into his office, stole client funds, and abducted Rachel without his knowledge or consent.”

Vanessa stared at the paper. Her pupils dilated with sheer, unadulterated panic. The color drained from her face, leaving her the color of wet chalk.

“He… he wouldn’t,” she stammered, her voice losing its edge, cracking into hysterical squeaks. “He promised me three million dollars! He said he’d transfer it to the Cayman account the day the trust cleared!”

“You were a subcontractor,” Daniel said, his eyes drilling into hers. “And subcontractors get discarded when the job goes bad. You think you’re going to a luxury hotel? You’re going to spend the next thirty years at Marysville Correctional Facility. Cole is already singing in cell block four. He told the prosecutor that Arthur Vance gave him the combination to the storage room lock.”

Vanessa began to shake. Her breath fogged the glass between them. “Cole… Cole is an idiot! He doesn't know where the original files are!”

“What original files?” Daniel pressed, leaning closer until his forehead almost touched the glass. “Tell me, Vanessa. Because if you give me Arthur Vance before the Friday hearing, I’ll tell the district attorney to pull the aggravated kidnapping charge. You might see daylight before you’re sixty. If you don’t, Arthur Vance will make sure you don’t survive your first year inside.”

Vanessa’s chest rose and fell in ragged heaves. She looked past Daniel’s shoulder, terrified of the guards standing along the perimeter of the room.

“The teddy bear,” she whispered through the receiver, her voice trembling so violently the audio distorted.

Daniel frowned. “What?”

“Lily’s bear,” Vanessa hissed, tears finally spilling over her mascara-smeared cheeks. “You thought I just hid the brass key in the ear? That was Cole’s mistake! Cole put the brass key in the ear because he was terrified he’d lose it! But inside the belly… under the stuffing…”

She leaned in, her eyes wild with animal panic.

“There’s a safety deposit box key. Number 408. First National Bank of Boston. Arthur’s personal offshore ledgers are in that box, Daniel. He had me keep the key because his own office was audited by the IRS last spring. If you have that key, Arthur Vance doesn’t just go to prison—he burns to the ground.”
