Chapter 34 - Blood On The Concrete

The arrest of Arthur Vance dominated the morning news cycle.
Headlines screamed across every digital media outlet in the country:
**PROMINENT ESTATE ATTORNEY ARRESTED ON RUNWAY IN CONNECTION TO SUBURBAN KIDNAPPING CONSPIRACY.**
By noon, the district attorney’s office had filed forty-two felony counts against Arthur Vance, Vanessa Greyson, and Cole Davies. The state was seeking life imprisonment without the possibility of parole for all three.
Daniel, Rachel, and Lily sat in the safe-house provided by the Department of Justice—a secure, two-story brick home located on a wooded state police compound sixty miles outside the city.
State troopers stood guard at the perimeter gates. Surveillance cameras monitored every approach.
For the first time in eight months, Rachel was laughing.
She sat on the carpeted floor of the safe-house living room, helping Lily assemble a complex plastic dollhouse. The terror had not vanished entirely, but the suffocating weight had lifted. The monsters were behind steel bars. The locks were on the outside of their cells now.
“Look, Mommy,” Lily beamed, snapping a tiny pink roof onto the toy house. “This room has big windows. So the mommy can see the outside all the time.”
Rachel swallowed hard, her eyes shining with unshed tears, and kissed Lily’s temple. “It’s beautiful, baby. The prettiest house in the world.”
Daniel watched them from the kitchen doorway, holding a cup of hot coffee. His heart should have felt at peace.
It didn’t.
Arthur Vance’s final words on the wet tarmac echoed incessantly in his skull like a tolling bell:
*“You think Vanessa and I wanted fourteen million dollars? Look at the fifth folder on that drive. It wasn’t an extortion plot… it was an extraction.”*
Daniel set his coffee mug down and walked into the small study where his encrypted DOJ laptop sat on the desk. Marcus Reed had granted Daniel view-only access to the decoded evidence files before heading back to the capitol for the grand jury indictments.
Daniel opened the system. He bypassed the financial statements. He bypassed the recordings of Vanessa and Cole.
He navigated down the directory tree to the fifth root folder: **ARCHIVE_05_CONTAINMENT**.
Inside sat a single encrypted sub-folder that Marcus Reed’s technical team had marked as *“CORRUPT / UNREADABLE.”*
Daniel stared at the file name: **RACHEL_BIOLOGICAL_RECORDS.DAT**.
Why would Arthur Vance have Rachel’s biological records? Rachel was an artist, an elementary school art teacher from a modest family in Maine. She had met Daniel at a gallery showing in Boston eight years ago. She had no wealth. No corporate connections. No criminal history.
Daniel opened the file using a hex editor. Most of the data was scrambled, but buried within the raw binary header was an unencrypted medical scan from a private genetics laboratory in Zurich, Switzerland, dated twenty-four hours after Rachel was abducted.
It wasn't a custody document.
It was a full chromosomal sequencing report.
And at the bottom of the page, beneath Rachel’s blood panel, was a secondary profile labeled: **SUBJECT CHILD: LILY GREYSON.**
Beneath Lily’s profile was a note typed in German, translated beneath in red text:
*“Carrier confirmed for maternal lineage Tier-1 markers. Subject child possesses the rare mitochondrial phenotype required for the Vance-Holloway estate succession charter. Extraction successful. Child must be delivered to Geneva facility prior to sixth birthday for mandatory identity registration. If biological mother interferes, terminate.”*
Daniel’s blood turned to liquid nitrogen.
Lily was turning six years old in three days.
The storage room had never been about Vanessa wanting to be a mother. It had never been about Cole getting five hundred thousand dollars. It had never even been about Arthur Vance stealing Daniel’s inheritance.
Rachel had been locked away because she wouldn’t let them take Lily.
Daniel’s hands shook violently as he grabbed his phone to call Marcus Reed.
Before he could hit the call button, the phone in his hand vibrated. It was Detective Miller’s number.
“Miller,” Daniel said, his voice tight with rising panic. “Miller, you need to read the German files on that drive. This isn’t over. Arthur was working for someone overseas—someone who wants Lily!”
There was no answer from Miller.
Only the sound of heavy, labored breathing over the line.
“Miller?” Daniel barked.
A wet, choking cough came through the speaker.
*“Daniel…”* Miller’s voice was a ragged, bubbling gasp. *“The… the transport van… from the courthouse…”*
“Miller! Where are you?”
*“They… they hit us on the bypass…”* Miller whispered, his voice fading rapidly into deathly silence. *“Not cops… military… Arthur is dead… they executed him in the back of the van… they took Vanessa… Daniel… they know where the safe-house is…”*
May you like
The call went dead.
