Chapter 31 - When The Alarms Go Dark

The front door of Daniel’s home stood ajar by two inches. The brass deadbolt had not been picked; the entire doorframe had been blown inward by a hydraulic ram, splintering the white-painted pine into jagged shards.

Daniel stepped into the foyer, his back pressed against the wall, weapon raised.

The interior of the house was completely dark. The power had been cut at the main breaker box outside. The security keypad beside the coat rack was shattered, its digital screen dangling from colored copper wires like pulled intestines.

The only sound was the rhythmic drip of water from Daniel’s drenched jacket onto the hardwood floor.

*Drip. Drip. Drip.*

“Rachel?” Daniel called out, keeping his voice low, his eyes scanning the pitch-black hallway. “Lily?”

No answer.

The air smelled of ozone, burnt electrical insulation, and the unmistakable metallic tang of discharge from a suppressed firearm.

Daniel moved forward through the entryway. In the living room, the coffee table was overturned. Couch cushions had been sliced open with a razor, the white stuffing pulled out in desperate handfuls. The bookshelf was cleared, every novel and family album dumped onto the floor in an aggressive, frenzied search.

On the floor near the television lay Rachel’s cell phone. The screen was cracked into a spiderweb pattern, still blinking with four missed calls from Daniel.

Beside it was a single drop of crimson blood.

Daniel felt a surge of murderous fury so intense his vision tunneled. He checked every doorway: the kitchen, the dining room, the pantry. Empty.

Then, from the upstairs hallway, he heard the faint, muffled sound of a child’s sob.

Daniel took the stairs two at a time, moving silently along the carpeted runners. His weapon cleared each step before his boots landed. At the top of the landing, the door to Lily’s bedroom stood wide open.

Daniel swung around the doorframe, weapon leveled at center mass.

“Hands!” he roared.

Inside the room, a man dressed in dark gray civilian clothes turned sharply. He was holding a tactical flashlight in his left hand and a combat knife in his right. He was mid-motion, having just ripped open the back of the brown teddy bear with his blade.

Cotton stuffing littered the floor like snow.

On the bed in the corner, Rachel was shielding Lily with her entire body. Rachel’s face was bruised along the cheekbone, her lip bleeding, but she held a heavy brass table lamp like a club, ready to strike.

Lily was crying silently, her face buried in Rachel’s sweater.

The man in gray didn't hesitate. The moment Daniel entered, the man lunged forward, lunging with the knife in a lethal upward slash.

Daniel fired.

The sharp *crack* of the unsuppressed 9mm round deafened the small bedroom.

The bullet struck the man in the right shoulder, spinning him around with violent force. The knife clattered against the baseboard. The man crashed onto his knees, dropping the tactical flashlight, clutching his bleeding collarbone with a guttural scream of pain.

Daniel closed the distance instantly. He kicked the flashlight across the room, pressed the hot muzzle of the pistol directly against the man’s forehead, and jammed his knee into the man’s wounded shoulder.

“Don’t move,” Daniel hissed, his voice trembling with deadly intent. “Give me one reason not to pull this trigger right now.”

The man choked on his own blood, gasping against the floor. “Vance… Vance pays five hundred grand for the key… you’re already dead, Greyson…”

Rachel scrambled up from the bed, her eyes wide with shock and relief. “Daniel! Behind him! The other one ran down the back stairs!”

Before Daniel could react, the screech of sirens tore through the stormy afternoon outside. Red and blue strobes painted the walls of Lily’s bedroom through the blinds.

Tires screeched on the pavement below. Car doors slammed.

“Police! Drop your weapons! Show your hands!”

Miller’s voice boomed up the stairwell.

Daniel didn’t take his eyes off the intruder on the floor. With his free hand, he reached into the ruined, torn chest cavity of the shredded teddy bear lying beside the man’s boots.

His fingers brushed against cold metal.

Beneath the cotton, wedged deep inside a stitched pocket of heavy canvas that had never been part of the original toy, Daniel’s fingers closed around a heavy, rectangular brass safety deposit key stamped with the number **408**, and beneath it, a tiny, encrypted metallic thumb drive.

The man on the floor groaned, staring at the drive in Daniel’s hand.

“You have no idea… who you just stole from,” the intruder coughed, blood bubbling at the corner of his lips. “That drive… isn’t just Arthur’s bank accounts. It’s the client list.”

Daniel stood up as Detective Miller and three armed officers burst into the bedroom with rifles drawn.

Daniel slowly lowered his weapon, clicking the safety on, and looked at Miller.

“Book this man,” Daniel said, his voice cold as winter ice. “And call the state attorney general. We’re taking down Arthur Vance tonight.”
