Chapter 29 - The Fall of the Architect

*BANG!*

The muzzle flash cut through the torrential rain. The bullet tore through the fleshy part of my left shoulder, spinning me violently toward the edge. Pain exploded across my nervous system like white fire, but the icy adrenaline running through my veins kept my boots anchored to the wet rock.

Alexander didn't get to fire a second shot.

As he lunged forward to pin me, his foot slipped on the moss-covered shale of the cliff edge. He stumbled, his momentum carrying him directly into my reach.

Ignoring the agony in my shattered shoulder, I dropped low, grabbed the lapel of his tactical vest with my right hand, and used his own desperate weight against him—a judo throw I had drilled a thousand times during the eight lonely years I spent preparing for the day the Vances came back for us.

We hit the muddy ground together in a tangle of limbs and fury.

Alexander’s pistol clattered across the wet rocks, sliding over the edge and plunging into the black abyss of the river below.

He snarled, wrapping his gloved hands around my throat, squeezing with the desperate, hysterical strength of a man fighting suffocation. “You die with me!” he choked out, his blood-flecked spit hitting my face. “You die with me, Elena!”

My vision swam with gray spots. My lungs burned for air. His thumbs pressed deep into my trachea, crushing my windpipe.

*Mia,* my mind screamed. *Mia needs you.*

My right hand blindly clawed at the wet shale beneath me. My fingers closed around a jagged, palm-sized chunk of granite.

With every ounce of strength remaining in my body, I brought the stone down against the side of Alexander’s skull.

*CRACK.*

The grip on my throat instantly slackened. Alexander groaned, rolling off me onto his back, blood streaming from his temple into his slate-gray eyes.

I rolled over onto my hands and knees, coughing violently, gasping in the freezing rain, dragging air back into my starved lungs. I picked up the heavy stone again, standing over him, rain washing the soot and blood from my face.

Alexander lay on the edge of the cliff, half his body suspended over the yawning drop to the rocks below. He looked up at me, his breathing shallow, rattling in his chest like dry leaves.

“Do it,” he whispered, a broken, bloody smirk playing on his lips. “Kill me, Elena. Prove you’re just like us. Prove you’re a Vance.”

I stared down at him. My chest heaved. The stone in my hand felt heavy, tempting, dripping with the vengeance of eight years of terror, eight years of tears, eight years of watching my daughter limp because of his family’s vanity.

I could crush his skull. I could end it right here.

I lowered the stone.

“No,” I whispered, tossing the rock into the abyss behind him. “You’re not getting an easy death on this mountain, Alexander. You’re going to live long enough to watch your body fail in a federal medical prison. You’re going to die knowing that Mia will inherit every single penny of your offshore empire... and she will use it to tear down everything your dynasty ever built.”

Alexander’s eyes widened with genuine, paralyzing horror. That was his true hell: not death, but obsolescence. Not pain, but watching the peasant he despised give his sacred bloodline’s wealth to the world.

Suddenly, the shale beneath Alexander’s hips gave way with a sickening, grinding crack.

The rock shelf, weakened by the torrential rain and the explosive shockwave from the bunker, sheer-sliced away from the cliff face.

“Elena!” Alexander screamed, his hands clawing desperately at the wet mud.

For a split second, our eyes met. He reached his hand up toward me—begging. The proud, untouchable billionaire architect of the Vance Dynasty was reduced to a drowning rat reaching for a lifeline.

I didn't pull away. But I didn't reach down.

I simply stood there, in the pouring rain, and watched him fall.

There was no cinematic scream. Only the rush of wind, the violent snap of branches against the lower rock face, and a distant, heavy splash as the black currents of the Hudson River swallowed Alexander Vance whole.
