Chapter 14 - The Stalker in the Glass House

We couldn't go back to the farmhouse. Not the front way.
I took the logging trails through the state forest, the four-wheel-drive grinding through three-foot drifts until we reached the back ridge above our property. The sun had dipped below the mountains, leaving the valley submerged in a bruised purple twilight.
I left Mia in the cab with the engine running, wrapped in a fleece survival blanket with the spare satellite phone in her hand. "Mia, baby, listen to me," I whispered, holding her face in my hands. Her big blue eyes were wide, but she didn't cry. She had learned too young what danger smelled like. "If you hear two gunshots, you press the green button on this phone. Vogel will pick up. You tell him the coordinates on the dashboard. Do you understand?"
"Mommy... is Uncle Julian here?" she whispered, her lip quivering.
"Not for long," I said, kissing her forehead.
I slipped through the woods on foot, circling the perimeter of the farmhouse. The power lines had been severed clean at the transformer pole—a professional cut. The house was pitch-black, a frozen tomb against the snow.
Through the massive floor-to-ceiling glass windows of the remodeled barn room, I saw it.
A flashlight beam danced across my desk.
Someone was inside. They weren't looking for jewelry or silver. They were tearing the floorboards beneath my work desk apart, looking for the original, uncompressed thumb drive that held the raw, uncut 14-minute source video of the entire afternoon of Mia’s abuse—the tape that proved not only Julian’s violence, but my father’s instruction to "shut the little girl up before she ruins the photo op."
I slipped through the basement bulkhead door, my boots silent on the stone steps. The house smelled of spilled kerosene and burnt copper.
As I crested the top of the basement stairs, a shadow detached itself from the hallway wall.
A heavy gloved forearm slammed into my throat, pinning me against the doorframe. My breath exploded from my chest. The Glock was knocked from my hand, clattering across the hardwood floor.
"You really thought you could hide from the family, Elena?"
The voice was low, sneering, and thick with expensive bourbon.
Julian.
His face was illuminated by the moonlight reflecting off the snow outside. He looked thinner than when he entered prison, but his eyes burned with that vicious, entitled madness that our father had nurtured into him like a prized fighting dog.
His fingers clamped down on my windpipe. "Do you have any idea what six months in a state facility does to a Vance? The filth I had to breathe? The animals I had to look at?" He leaned in, his hot, sour breath against my ear. "Mom wants Mia back for the cameras. But nobody said you had to survive the custody transfer."
He reached behind his back, sliding an eight-inch serrated hunting knife from a tactical sheath.
He was so consumed by his monologue, so intoxicated by his own inherited cruelty, that he didn't realize I wasn't clawing at his hands.
My right hand was in my waistband, pulling out the cattle prod I had kept from our horse farm in Vermont.
I drove the dual prongs directly into his groin and pulled the trigger.
Fifty thousand volts of electric current ripped through his nervous system. Julian let out a strangled, bubbling shriek as his muscles locked in violent, catastrophic spasms. His eyes rolled back into his skull, the hunting knife slipping from his useless fingers.
He collapsed to the hardwood floor like an empty suit of clothes, convulsing and gasping for air.
I didn't hesitate. I scooped up my Glock, stepped on his wrist until I heard the small bones crack, and leveled the barrel between his wild, bloodshot eyes.
"Where is Mother?" I whispered.
Julian spat blood onto my boots, laughing through the agony. "She’s not... in the car, Elena. She’s at the Lenox Club... meeting the probate commissioner. By midnight... you won't even be her legal mother anymore."
"You forgot one detail, Julian," I said, cocking the hammer.
"What's that... you psycho?"
May you like
"Grandfather Marcus hated you."
