Chapter 24 - The Skeleton in the Offshore Vault

Rain poured down like liquid lead, drenching my hair and plastering my clothes to my skin. Across the flooded asphalt of Fifth Avenue, the doors of three black Escalades swung open simultaneously. Men in tactical wet-weather gear stepped out, umbrellas in hand, forming an impenetrable semicircle around the museum exit.

Mia clutched my waist, her body shivering uncontrollably from the freezing rain and sheer terror.

From behind the center vehicle stepped a woman.

She wasn't a mercenary. She wore an ivory cashmere coat that remained miraculously dry under an umbrella held by a bodyguard. Her silver-blonde hair was pinned into an immaculate chignon, and her sapphire earrings sparkled under the streetlamps.

Victoria Vance.

My mother-in-law. The woman who had sneered at Mia’s broken bones, who had whispered into Donald’s ear to starve us, who had orchestrated our exile with aristocratic cruelty.

“You...” I breathed, stepping back toward the brick wall. “Miller’s team arrested you. You were supposed to be in federal custody!”

Victoria offered a thin, venomous smile, stepping gracefully over a puddle. “Federal custody, Elena? For a Vance? A few phone calls to the Deputy Attorney General, a reminder of certain campaign contributions, and the marshals realized they had made an unfortunate procedural error regarding my arrest warrant.”

She tilted her head, looking at Mia not with the warmth of a grandmother, but with the cold, calculating appraisal of an art collector inspecting a rare porcelain vase.

“My son Alexander has always been dramatic,” Victoria murmured, her voice smooth and venomous. “Faking his death in the North Sea... hiding in Zurich while Donald and Julian made fools of themselves. But in the end, blood returns to blood. Did you really think you could erase us with a 42-second video?”

“You orchestrated this together,” I said, my voice shaking with raw hatred. “You and Alexander. You let Donald take the fall.”

“Donald was getting sloppy. His gambling debts in Macau were becoming an embarrassment, and Julian was an undisciplined dog who couldn't control his sadistic impulses,” Victoria said coldly, as if discussing pruning dead branches from a prize rosebush. “Alexander saw the inevitable collapse coming years ago. He allowed you to expose them, Elena. You cleared our balance sheet of liabilities. You purged the board of idiots. And now, the family empire consolidates under Alexander... and his rightful heir.”

“She is not your heir! She is my daughter!” I screamed, stepping forward, ready to tear Victoria’s throat out with my bare hands.

Two mercenaries instantly raised suppressed submachine guns, their red laser dots dancing across my forehead and chest.

“Mommy!” Mia shrieked, jumping in front of me, spreading her frail arms wide. “Don't hurt my mommy! Don't hurt her!”

The sight of my eight-year-old daughter, her leg still scarred and fragile from their cruelty, trying to shield me from armed killers broke something inside me. The last remaining shred of fear evaporated, replaced by an incandescent, terrifying clarity.

Suddenly, a blinding pair of high beams shattered the darkness from the north intersection of Fifth Avenue.

A modified, heavily armored Mack garbage truck roared down the avenue, its engine screaming at maximum RPM, completely ignoring the police barricades.

“Look out!” one of the mercenaries yelled.

The massive steel plow of the truck slammed into the side of the leading Escalade with catastrophic force, sending the two-ton SUV flipping through the air like a toy and smashing it into the museum fountain in a shower of sparks and shattered glass.

Before Victoria’s men could react, the passenger door of the truck flew open.

A familiar, scarred face leaned out through the spray of rain. It was Marcus Vance’s former head of personal security—the man Donald had fired six years ago, the only man who had remained loyal to the grandfather’s true will: Thomas Keller.

“Elena! Get in!” Keller roared, racking the slide of an automatic shotgun. “Move!”
