Chapter 20 - The Bloodline's Final Trap

The massive glass atrium of the Temple of Dendur glowed like a celestial lantern over Central Park.

Inside, three hundred members of the American aristocracy stood in black-tie attire, sipping vintage champagne, their diamonds catching the illumination of the two-thousand-year-old Egyptian sandstone.

At the center of the raised podium stood my father, Donald Vance, who had arrived via private helicopter after the fire, wearing a fresh tuxedo that masked the smell of smoke, laughing with the Governor of New York.

At 4:02 AM, the towering glass emergency doors of the atrium were kicked open with a thunderous crash that echoed off the ancient stone monuments.

The music stopped dead.

The string quartet lowered their bows. Three hundred socialites turned, glasses frozen at their lips.

I walked into the center of the grand hall.

I wore muddy work boots, soaked denim, and a jacket streaked with soot and blood. In my right hand, I carried the antique vellum of *The Sentinel Trust*. In my left, I held Mia’s hand.

Mia wore her bright yellow beanie, her little winter sweater, and walked with her head held high—no cast, no limp, her silver surgical scar exposed for every camera in the room to see.

Beside us stepped two men who did not belong to the Greenwich police force: Special Agent Marcus Thorne of the Department of Justice’s Public Corruption Unit, flanked by six armed federal agents.

"Donald Vance!" Thorne’s voice cut through the silence like an artillery shell. "By order of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York, step down from the dais. The assets of the Vance Holding Corporation have been seized under federal racketeering statutes."

Donald’s glass slipped from his fingers, shattering across the white marble floor, the red wine spilling like a pool of blood.

"What is the meaning of this?" Donald spluttered, his face turning an apocalyptic purple. "Do you know who I am? Do you know who sits on my board?"

"You have no board, Donald," I said, my voice echoing across the silent hall, carrying the weight of twenty years of silence, twenty years of bruises, twenty years of swallowed poison.

I laid the Sentinel Deed onto the podium before the assembled press corps.

"As of 3:45 AM, the Isle of Man Chancery court executed Marcus Vance’s succession clause. Donald Vance, Julian Vance, and Victoria Vance have been removed as trustees, officers, and beneficiaries. The Vance Dynasty is legally dissolved."

A collective, horrified gasp rippled through the room. Cameras flashed in a blinding frenzy. The socialites backed away from Donald as if he had suddenly broken out in the plague.

Donald looked at me, his eyes hollow, his lips trembling with an impotent, pathetic whimpering. The empire he had built on cruelty had turned into dust beneath his feet.

I looked down at Mia. A radiant, triumphant smile spread across her face. We had won. The monsters were stripped of their claws. The cage was broken.

And then, my satellite phone vibrated in my pocket.

A private text message. An unlisted number.

I pulled it out, my thumb swiping the screen.

It was a photo.

A photo taken thirty seconds ago, through a high-powered sniper scope, crosshairs perfectly centered between Mia’s eyes as she stood holding my hand in the museum.

Beneath the photo was a single line of text:

*“Did you really think Victoria was the head of the family, Elena? Look at the balcony above the sarcophagus. And remember who Mia’s father really is.”*

My breath turned to ash.

I slowly, terrifyingly raised my eyes toward the dark mezzanine gallery overlooking the ancient temple.

Standing in the shadows, holding a suppressed rifle case, was a man I hadn't seen in eight years—a man who was supposed to be dead.
