Chapter 12 - The Unholy Bailout

The courthouse records in Stamford were supposed to be sealed until the appellate review in spring, but money does not obey court orders; it dissolves them.
By dawn, I had locked every deadbolt, turned on the perimeter infrared cameras I had installed during our first week, and called Martin Vogel, the criminal prosecutor who had secured the initial indictments against my family. Vogel was a ruthless, bulldog litigator who despised white-collar monsters, but when he answered my call at 6:15 AM, his voice sounded gutted.
"Vogel," I said, my voice dead and flat. "Julian was outside my gate last night."
There was a heavy pause on the line. The rustle of papers, the sound of a lighter clicking, followed by an exhalation of cigarette smoke.
"Elena," Vogel whispered, checking his surroundings even through the encrypted line. "You need to take Mia and leave the country. Today."
"Julian was sentenced to six years at Garner Correctional. The matriarch was under home confinement awaiting trial for tampering with evidence. How was he driving a half-million-dollar truck through a Berkshire snowstorm?"
"The appellate panel held an emergency closed-door hearing yesterday afternoon at four o'clock," Vogel said, bitter fury bleeding through his words. "Judge Harrison—the same judge whose re-election campaign received three million dollars from an offshore trust tied to your mother’s Cayman accounts—granted an emergency supersedeas bond. They cited 'new exculpatory video forensic evidence' claiming the 42-second clip of Mia’s fall had been synthetically altered using deepfake technology."
A sickening ringing filled my ears. "Deepfake? We had three pediatric orthopedic surgeons and five emergency room nurses testify under oath about the angle of the compound fracture! The bone broke outward because Julian kicked her from behind while my mother held her arm!"
"It doesn’t matter what the truth is, Elena. You know how the dynasty works," Vogel said quietly. "Truth is an asset they trade on the secondary market. They brought in a digital forensics 'expert' from Tel Aviv who produced a 400-page affidavit claiming the shadows in the video were mathematically inconsistent with natural sunlight. Harrison ordered an immediate suspension of Julian’s sentence pending an evidentiary hearing in May. Your mother’s ankle monitor was cut off at five o'clock yesterday."
I leaned against the kitchen island, staring at the scar on Mia’s shin as she sat eating oatmeal at the table, completely unaware that the wolves who broke her were free.
"They aren't just trying to beat the charges, Elena," Vogel added, lowering his voice until it was almost a rasp. "Your father’s holding company didn't collapse when the video leaked. It contracted. The real board of directors—the European private equity consortium that holds eighty percent of the family’s wealth—gave your parents an ultimatum: settle the family scandal, eradicate the legal liability, and clean up the public bloodline, or the entire estate goes into forensic receivership."
"And how do they eradicate the legal liability?" I asked, though my soul already knew the answer.
May you like
"By eliminating the victim," Vogel answered. "If Mia recants her video testimony on camera—or if you are deemed an unfit, mentally unstable mother who fabricated the entire incident to extort your family—the state’s case evaporates. They don't just want you silent, Elena. They need your child on a leash, or they lose four hundred million dollars."
