Chapter 22 - The Uninvited Guest

The Sterling Corporation's annual shareholder summit was being held in the glass atrium of their new global headquarters in Manhattan.
Elena stood at the podium, projecting absolute authority as she outlined a record-breaking fiscal year.
Thomas sat in the front row, beaming with quiet pride as the crowd hung on her every word.
"The future of this company is rooted in sustainable growth and unyielding integrity," Elena concluded, stepping away from the microphone to a roar of applause.
As the clapping died down, the heavy double doors at the back of the atrium swung open.
Sebastian Sterling walked down the center aisle, his silver cane tapping rhythmically against the marble floor.
The room fell silent, confused by the sudden intrusion of the imposing, elegantly dressed stranger.
Elena’s security detail immediately moved to intercept him, but Elena held up a single hand, her sharp instincts warning her to let this play out.
"It is a beautiful speech, Elena," Sebastian called out, his voice carrying the natural, commanding acoustics of a seasoned billionaire.
"But you left out one crucial detail about the company's foundation."
Sebastian stopped a few feet from the stage, looking up at her with eyes that mirrored her dead father-in-law's.
"Who are you?" Elena demanded, her voice cool and perfectly level.
"I am Sebastian Sterling. Arthur's brother, and the co-founder of the original Sterling holding company."
Murmurs of shock rippled through the crowd of shareholders and journalists.
"Arthur bought you out in 1985," Elena stated, her encyclopedic knowledge of the company’s history instantly kicking in.
"He bought out my shares, yes," Sebastian smiled, pulling a yellowed, vintage legal document from his breast pocket.
"But he never dissolved the original family charter, which explicitly grants a lifetime board seat and veto power to any surviving first-generation Sterling."
Elena’s eyes narrowed. She knew immediately that this was not a PR stunt; this was a highly calculated legal ambush.

"I am invoking my right to take my seat on the board, effective immediately," Sebastian announced to the flashes of camera lenses.
"I look forward to working with you, my dear."
