Chapter 21 - The Shadow in the South

The coastal town of San Miguel was a place where desperate men went to be forgotten.
Julian Sterling sat at the sticky bar of a rundown tavern, staring blankly into a glass of cheap rum.
His hands were calloused from manual labor, his face weathered by the harsh sun and years of absolute misery.
He had become a ghost, just as Elena had commanded.
The rusted door of the tavern creaked open, letting in a gust of humid ocean air and a man who clearly did not belong in a place like this.
He wore a bespoke linen suit, carrying a silver-handled walking stick, his silver hair slicked back with aristocratic precision.
He possessed the exact same piercing blue eyes as Arthur Sterling.
"Look how far the mighty have fallen," the stranger said, pulling out the wobbly wooden stool next to Julian.
Julian didn't look up. "I don't have any money. Leave me alone."
"I am not here for your money, Julian," the man replied, signaling the bartender for a glass of their best whiskey.
"I am here for your name."
Julian finally turned his head, his bloodshot eyes narrowing as he studied the older man's familiar facial structure.
"Who the hell are you?" Julian slurred.
"My name is Sebastian Sterling," the man said, a cold, predatory smile stretching across his face.
"I am Arthur's younger brother. The one he erased from the family history forty years ago."
Julian stared in shock. He had heard vague, hushed rumors of an uncle who had been banished for attempting to steal the company in its infancy, but he thought it was a myth.
"Arthur is dead," Julian muttered, looking back at his drink. "And I have nothing. Elena took it all."
"She took it because my brother was a sentimental fool at the end," Sebastian corrected, his voice dripping with venom.
"I have spent four decades building a shadow empire in Europe, waiting for Arthur to die."
"And now, I am going to take back the Sterling legacy from the outsider who stole it."
Sebastian placed a thick, black envelope on the bar in front of Julian.
"I need a biological heir to challenge her in federal court, Julian."

"Help me destroy Elena, and I will give you back your life."
Julian stared at the envelope, the dormant, toxic ambition slowly reigniting in his hollow chest.
