Chapter 55 - The Trigger She Never Expected

The freezing mist clung to our clothes like wet wool as we breached the estate's lower perimeter.
The security was concentrated entirely at the front gates, anticipating our arrival by the private driveway. Isabella was expecting a broken, defeated sister crawling to her on hands and knees with legal documents in hand. She wasn't expecting two ghosts emerging from the black depths of Lake Geneva.
We moved along the stone breakwater, stepping silently across the algae-slick rocks until we reached the private boathouse. Inside, moored in the covered slip, sat a eighty-foot mahogany Riva yacht. Above the slip, accessible by a spiral staircase, was the glass-walled second-floor observation lounge.
Through the illuminated glass, we saw them.
Isabella was pacing behind the table, checking a diamond-encrusted wristwatch. Across from her sat three elderly men in bespoke dark suits—the Swiss trustees of the Vance estate—examining legal ledgers beneath the soft glow of banker lamps.
And on the marble credenza in the corner, sleeping inside an insulated medical basket, was our son.
Khloe’s breath hitched in her throat. Seeing both of our children within fifty feet of each other for the first time sent a violent tremor through her body.
"Two guards inside the lounge," I whispered into her ear, my lips brushing her cold cheek. "One by the spiral stairs, one by the balcony. I take the stairs. You stay behind me until the room is clear."
"Marcus," she whispered, her eyes burning like white phosphorus. "Let me deal with Isabella."
I nodded once.
We moved.
I took the spiral stairs three steps at a time, silent as smoke. The guard at the landing turned, his hand reaching for his sidearm, but I was already inside his guard. I drove the heel of my palm upward under his chin, snapping his head back, and drove his temple into the reinforced steel railing. He crumpled without a sound.
Before the second guard by the balcony could turn, Khloe stepped through the threshold behind me.
She didn't hesitate. She didn't warn him.
*Pfft.*
The silenced Walther coughed. The second guard gasped, his eyes going wide as the 9mm hollow-point took him through the shoulder, spinning him around before he crashed through the glass partition onto the outer balcony deck.
The three Swiss trustees leaped from their chairs, scattering like terrified mice into the corners of the room, shouting in panicked French.
Isabella spun around, her face twisting into sheer, unadulterated shock.
"Khloe?!"
Khloe stepped fully into the light of the observation lounge. Grace was strapped securely to her chest, sleeping peacefully beneath the parka. Khloe held the pistol leveled with both hands, the barrel pointed directly at the bridge of Isabella’s perfectly contoured nose.
"Step away from my son," Khloe ordered, her voice vibrating with an authority that sucked all the air out of the room.
Isabella backed away slowly until her spine pressed against the edge of the marble credenza. Her eyes darted from the gun to Khloe’s face, searching frantically for the submissive, traumatized sister she had controlled for twenty-eight years. She found nothing but an executioner.
*"Khloe... put the gun down,"* Isabella stammered, raising her manicured hands in a pathetic gesture of surrender. *"The trustees... they're watching! If you shoot me, you forfeit the estate! You forfeit everything!"*
"I don't want your cursed empire, Isabella," Khloe snarled, stepping closer, until the cold steel barrel of the pistol was pressed directly against Isabella’s forehead. "I want my family. And you took that away the day you put me on that hospital floor in Boston."
*"Wait! Wait!"* Isabella shrieked, terror finally cracking her aristocratic mask into ugly, weeping hysteria. *"You can't kill me! Khloe, you don't know the whole truth! Catherine didn't harvest you!"*
Khloe’s finger tightened visibly on the trigger. "Shut up."
*"It was Marcus!"* Isabella screamed, her eyes bulging with manic, desperate venom as she pointed a shaking finger directly at me. *"Ask him who he worked for before he met you! Ask him why his private investigator firm was funded by Anthony Vance five years ago! He wasn't your protector, Khloe—he was the one who tracked you down in Ohio and delivered you to the Vance family in the first place!"*
The words hung in the sterile air like mustard gas.
Khloe didn't move. The gun remained pressed hard against Isabella’s forehead.
Slowly, agonizingly, Khloe’s eyes shifted sideways—away from the sister she hated, and locked directly onto mine.
Her gaze was unreadable, completely hollowed out by an abyss of newly awakened doubt.
"Marcus?" Khloe whispered, her voice barely a breath. "Tell me she's lying."
I stood five feet away, my heart turning to lead in my chest.
Before I could open my mouth, before the truth could claw its way past my throat, the dark waters of Lake Geneva below exploded into violence.
A massive searchlight from the fog-drenched lake snapped on, blinding the entire lounge in brilliant, searing white light. Through the shattered balcony doors, the deafening mechanical roar of a high-speed tactical assault boat tore through the night.
Over an amplified military loudspeaker, a voice echoed across the water—a voice that was impossible, a voice that belonged to a monster who had died three days ago.
*"Step away from the children, Khloe,"* the deep, synthesized baritone boomed over the lake. *"Or my snipers will paint that room in your blood."*
A laser designator's red dot appeared on the center of Khloe’s forehead.

Another red dot appeared on the swaddle containing Grace.
And from the darkness of the black water, the boat cut through the mist, bringing an army we never saw coming.
