Chapter 48 - The Mother’s Coldest Betrayal

The explosion sucked the air clean out of the room. The primary overhead lights went dead, plunging the entire medical theater into an eerie, pulsating twilight lit only by the sputtering red emergency strobes.
"The lower dock!" Catherine gasped, rolling onto her stomach, coughing through the thick cloud of pulverized drywall. "He destroyed the submarine launch! The lake water is breaching the foundation!"
A violent, rushing roar echoed from the darkened hallway—the terrifying sound of millions of gallons of freezing Alpine lake water punching through fractured reinforced concrete. The temperature in the room plummeted ten degrees in ten seconds. The cold was instantaneous, biting into our skin like needles.
"Marcus! We have to move!" Khloe screamed, shielding the newborn beneath her body against the wall as chunks of masonry slammed into the linoleum.
I scrambled to my feet, my muscles burning with lactic acid, and pulled Khloe up with my good arm. "Can you run?"
"I don't care if my legs snap, I'm carrying this baby out!" she cried. Her face was streaked with sweat, tears, and soot, but her spine was steel.
Anthony Vance lay motionless on the floor, his eyes fixed on the ceiling, the detonator resting loosely in his dead, cold fingers. He had extracted his final, suicidal vengeance against the family that bred him for utility and discarded him for failure.
Catherine scrambled toward the far side of the room, her elegant composure utterly shattered. She scrambled toward a concealed steel hatch hidden behind a faux-wood panel—a private vertical service shaft leading upward into the mountain. She jammed a bloody keycard into the lock, and the pneumatic door hissed open.
"Marcus, stop her!" Khloe yelled. "She has the codes!"
I sprinted toward Catherine, catching the hem of her cashmere coat just as she stepped into the elevator shaft. I jerked her backward with violent force. She tumbled out onto the wet floor, her manicured nails raking across the doorframe.
"Let me go, you peasant!" she screamed, her voice cracking into madness. "I built this empire! I traded my own flesh and blood for the Vance patents forty years ago! You think Khloe was the first? You think Anthony was my son?!"
Khloe froze mid-step, her eyes widening in horror through the swirling dust. "What did you say?"
Catherine sat on the floor, panting, clutching her bruised ribs, her eyes glittering with demonic satisfaction despite the water beginning to lap over her ankles. The freezing water was already two inches deep, pouring into the theater from the main corridor.
"Anthony wasn't my biological child," Catherine snarled, spitting a mouthful of blood onto the floor. "Neither was Isabella! My husband was sterile, barren! I harvested embryos from the Vance dynasty's extended branch—from women who died in our private clinics! Anthony was a product of the same genetic farm that produced *you*, Khloe!"
The air turned completely still between us, punctuated only by the roar of encroaching water.
"What... what are you talking about?" Khloe whispered, her knuckles turning white around the swaddled baby. "I grew up in Ohio. My parents were teachers. They died in a car crash when I was four!"
"A car crash arranged by Vance Trust logistics," Catherine hissed, a grotesque sneer twisting her features. "You were the purest strain. The Vance lineage carries a specific chromosomal marker required to unlock the Swiss family vault—a trust worth eleven billion dollars established in 1923 that can only be unlocked by verified matrilineal DNA. I couldn't claim it. Anthony couldn't claim it. Only a direct daughter of the Vance bloodline could. You weren't a surrogate, Khloe. You are the sole legitimate heir to the Vance bloodline. And your twins are the double-key!"
The monstrous truth hit like a physical blow.
Every single agony Khloe had suffered—the arranged marriage to Anthony, the sudden divorce, my sudden appearance in her life, the surrogate scheme Isabella claimed to run, the fake hospital records, the missing twin—it had all been an elaborate, multi-decade harvest. Khloe hadn't just been targeted. She had been cultivated from birth like livestock.
"You took my life," Khloe whispered, the words trembling with unimaginable horror. "You killed my parents... you used my sister..."
"Isabella knew," Catherine laughed, a sound that made my skin crawl. "Isabella sold you out the day she turned eighteen for a trust fund in the Cayman Islands. Why do you think she pushed you into Anthony’s bed? Why do you think she took the first twin into Boston? She wasn't saving your baby, Khloe. She was delivering the first half of the collateral to Zurich!"
Before Khloe could collapse under the sheer weight of the betrayal, a massive explosion tore through the far wall.

A solid torrent of black, freezing lake water smashed through the operating room doors, sweeping Anthony’s corpse across the floor like driftwood and knocking Catherine off her feet.
"Move!" I roared, grabbing Khloe’s waist and shoving her toward the vertical service shaft. "Get inside the shaft! NOW!"
