Chapter 21 - The Depository at Midnight

The blue and red lights of Massachusetts State Police cruisers painted the rain-slicked trees of Harvard in rhythmically strobing colors.

Catherine sat in the back of the lead cruiser, her hands cuffed in front of her to accommodate the makeshift splint the paramedics had wrapped around her broken wrist. Through the tinted safety glass, her eyes never left us. There was no remorse in her gaze—only the cold, calculating intelligence of a predator already planning her next appeal, her next legal maneuver, her next counter-attack.

Evelyn had been freed. The elderly nurse sat in the back of an ambulance wrapped in a shock blanket, giving her formal deposition to the detectives. The confession was on the record now. The hit-and-run from thirty-two years ago. The falsified birth certificates. The systemic blackmail Catherine had exerted over everyone who knew the truth.

"Mr. Davis?"

Detective Miller, a seasoned investigator with tired gray eyes and a soaking-wet fedora, approached my truck where Khloe, Isabella, and I were standing under the shelter of the open tailgate.

"The District Attorney's office has authorized emergency transit," Miller said, looking between Khloe and Isabella. "Given the nature of the allegations regarding the contents of Vault 402, and the risk of Catherine’s associates attempting to tamper with the depository before morning, we have a federal warrant to access the facility under police escort. Are you ready for this, Mrs. Davis?"

Khloe looked down at the brass key still clutched in her hand. Her knuckles were stained with dry plaster dust from the shattered ceiling.

"I need to know," Khloe said simply.

We rode into Boston under police escort, the sirens muted as we cut through the deserted highways of eastern Massachusetts. Isabella sat beside Khloe in the back seat of our truck, Nathan sleeping soundly against his aunt's chest. It was a bizarre, almost surreal image—Isabella, whose red heels had once been synonymous with cruelty, now gently stroking Nathan's soft cheek with her scraped, unpolished fingernails.

"I didn't know about Mom," Isabella whispered into the dark of the cab, her voice fragile. "I swear to God, Khloe. Dad told me when Mom died that she was sick. I only found out the truth when Catherine brought me the draft files six months ago. She told me that if I didn't help her force you to sign over the trust, she would release the accident files to the media and destroy Nathan’s future before he was even born."

"Why didn't you just come to me, Bella?" Khloe asked softly, looking out the window at the approaching skyline of Boston.

"Because I was jealous," Isabella choked out, the admission tearing through her like broken glass. "I had spent my entire life trying to make Dad proud of me. I built a company. I married who he wanted. I dressed how he wanted. And he looked at me like I was a business transaction. But you... he looked at you like you were his salvation. I hated you for it. And Catherine used that hate to blind me."

Khloe didn't answer with words. She simply reached out and placed her hand over Isabella’s trembling fingers.

At 5:15 AM, the convoy pulled up in front of Bay State Vaults—a brutalist limestone fortress nestled between modern glass skyscrapers in the heart of the financial district.

Two armed private security officers in tactical gear stood beside the massive wrought-iron doors, waiting for Detective Miller and the federal marshals.

The heavy steel doors hissed open, admitting us into the subterranean labyrinth beneath the city. The air smelled of ozone, filtered air, and cold, polished marble. We descended three flights into the bedrock, passing through four separate biometric security checkpoints until we reached the inner sanctum: a vault door four feet thick, gleaming with polished chromium and brass gears.

The depository manager, an elderly man in a sharp black suit who looked as if he hadn't slept in thirty years, stood before a wall of thousands of numbered brass boxes.

"Box 402," Detective Miller said, presenting the federal warrant.

The manager inspected the court order, nodded solemnly, and retrieved a master key from a heavy lockbox on his desk. He walked to the center of the wall, inserting his key into the upper slot of box 402.

"Now, the secondary key and the biometric confirmation," the manager said, looking at Khloe.

Khloe stepped forward. Her breathing was steady now. She took the brass key Isabella had hidden in the knitted blanket and slid it into the lower keyway.

She turned the key to the right.

A heavy mechanical clunk reverberated inside the wall. Then, a small red laser scanner beneath the keyhole illuminated, projecting a narrow beam across the glass sensor pad.

"Place your thumb on the glass, Mrs. Davis," the manager instructed.

Khloe pressed her thumb against the glass.

The scanner hummed. A second passed. Two seconds. Three.

Then, a sharp, angry buzz cut through the silence.

The light flashed crimson.
