Chapter 29 - The Decryption Key

We stopped at an abandoned gas station off Exit 23, deep in the New Hampshire pine forests. The rain had turned to sleet, rattling against the metal roof of the awning like buckshot.

While Khloe took Nathan into the filthy single-stall restroom to change him, I pulled my laptop out from beneath my seat and plugged in the encrypted flash drive we had recovered from the depository.

Catherine sat in the passenger seat now, shivering violently under my spare fleece jacket, a bottle of cheap antiseptic clutched in her hand as she poured it directly over her leaking abdominal incision. She didn't scream, just bit down on her knuckles until they bled.

"The password," I said, slamming the laptop onto the dashboard. "Anthony said the drive requires a 24-character alphanumeric key. What is it?"

Catherine wiped her bloody mouth. "It's not a password. It's a biometric file. An audio file."

"What audio file?"

"The night he murdered Isabella's fiancé four years ago," Catherine said, staring out at the frozen pines. "Anthony made me record it on a micro-cassette. He told me it was my collateral—proof that if I ever betrayed him, I was an accessory to murder. But I didn't save it as audio. I digitized the frequency into a binary sequence. That's the master key for the offshore accounts."

My fingers flew across the keyboard. "Where is the file stored?"

"Inside Nathan's medical discharge paperwork," Catherine whispered.

My breath caught. I turned to look at the backseat. The damp envelope Khloe had dropped was sitting on the floor. I tore it open. Behind the blood-type report was a laminated card—Nathan’s footprint record from the neonatal ward.

On the back of the card, almost invisible beneath the hospital’s official embossed seal, was a series of microscopic barcode numbers printed in pale gray ink.

I typed the numbers into the laptop’s decryption prompt.

*Access Granted.*

A sprawling directory blossomed on the screen. Cayman Island shell companies, private air manifests, pharmaceutical receipts... and live surveillance feeds.

I clicked on the single active video link marked *DOCK_NORTH_WINNIPESAUKEE*.

The screen flickered. The camera was mounted high in the rafters of a weathered wooden boathouse. Below, tied securely to a heavy iron chair suspended directly over an open slip of freezing black lake water, was Isabella. Her clothes were soaked, her head sagging against her chest.

Standing on the wooden walkway behind her, wearing a tailored black wool coat and holding a satellite phone, was Anthony.

Beside him on the dock was a surgical cooler and an array of portable medical equipment.

"He's ready for him," Catherine whispered, her voice trembling in terror. "He doesn't plan on letting anyone leave that boathouse alive. The moment he takes Nathan's blood... he's dropping Isabella into the lake."
