Chapter 41 - The Dead Man's Fingerprint

Teterboro Airport was blanketed in gray, freezing rain when we pulled the Defender behind the private hangar of executive terminal C.

The Gulfstream G550 sat on the tarmac, its twin Rolls-Royce engines whining at low idle, blowing shimmering heat waves across the wet asphalt. A private fuel truck was just disconnecting its hoses, and two ground handlers in neon-yellow vests were loading luggage into the rear compartment.

I parked the vehicle behind a row of maintenance sheds, out of sight of the terminal cameras.

"We have a problem," I said, tapping the screen of Anthony's encrypted phone.

The screen had completely locked. A bold, red system banner covered the center: *BIOMETRIC AUTHENTICATION REQUIRED TO ACCESS FLIGHT CREDENTIALS AND ESCROW CLEARANCE.*

"The pilot won't spin the turbines without the digital escrow release from Anthony's phone," Isabella said, her face draining of color. "It’s a security protocol Catherine uses for all offshore charters. Anthony has to authorize the flight plan with his thumbprint every four hours, or the pilots are instructed to shut down the aircraft and notify local authorities."

"Anthony is at the bottom of a lake in New Hampshire," Khloe said, her voice dropping into panic. "Marcus... we don't have his thumb!"

"Look in the glove box," I ordered, my mind racing through the gruesome possibilities of how Anthony operated. "A man who plans this far ahead doesn't rely solely on his own finger in sub-zero weather. Anthony was paranoid. He wore tactical gloves during the kidnapping."

Khloe tore through the glove box, scattering registration papers, insurance cards, and ammunition boxes across the passenger seat.

Nothing.

"There's nothing here!" she cried.

I looked at the center console. Between the two front bucket seats was a heavy, reinforced steel safe with a biometric scanner on its lid.

I picked up the satellite phone and looked at the sensor. It was an optical capacitive reader—the kind that required both a dermal ridge pattern and a specific thermal or conductive signature to unlock.

"The medical kit," I suddenly remembered, turning around to look at the trunk. "Anthony had a tactical trauma kit in the back. Isabella, grab it!"

Isabella scrambled over the seats, dragging a heavy black nylon bag from the cargo area. She unzipped it, dumping surgical tape, hemostatic gauze, scalpels, and sterile silicon wraps onto the seat.

"What are you looking for?" she asked frantically.

I pulled out a small, clear plastic container labeled *DERMAL REPLICATION GEL*.

Anthony had anticipated being injured, captured, or incapacitated. He had a silicone-molded cast of his own right thumb and index finger, coated with conductive graphene powder, stored inside a temperature-controlled vial. It was the tool spies and corporate operatives used to bypass high-end biometric safes if they lost their hands in the field.

My hands shook as I unscrewed the vial with my bloody fingers.

I pulled out the flexible, skin-colored silicone sheath. It was cold to the touch.

"Khloe, give me your hand," I commanded.

Khloe reached forward. I slipped the silicone sheath over her right thumb. It fit loosely, but when she pressed her warm flesh against the interior, the graphene coating heated up to body temperature within three seconds.

"Press the sensor," I whispered.

Khloe brought her thumb down against the glowing sapphire scanner of the satellite phone.

*SCANNING...*

The screen flashed yellow.

*AUTHENTICATION COMPLETE. WELCOME, ANTHONY VANCE.*

A green checkmark appeared, followed by the complete digital flight manifest, the pre-cleared diplomatic transit codes, and the encrypted private hangar access for the Zurich executive terminal.

"It worked," Khloe breathed, her eyes welling with fresh tears.

"Now," I said, grabbing the passports and pulling my coat tight around my chest. "We become the Vance family. Act like you own every square foot of that tarmac. If anyone looks at us twice, don't speak. Just show them the screens."

We opened the doors of the Defender and stepped out into the freezing New Jersey rain.
