Chapter 5 - HOUSE OF GLASSAt 3:04 a.m., the Vance estate no longer looked invincible.

Federal vehicles lined the circular driveway.
Investigators carried boxes through doors once reserved for senators and royalty.
Julian stood in his father's old library, watching agents photograph financial records.
Eleanor paced behind him.
"This is her fault."
Julian didn't answer.
"This is Clara's fault!"
"Mother, stop."
"You let that girl into this family!"
Julian turned.
"That girl owns thirty-eight percent of the company."
Eleanor froze.
For years they had spoken about Clara's shares as if they were temporary inconveniences.
Now those shares were becoming the only block large enough to decide control.
Eleanor moved closer.
"Call Caldwell."
"I did."
"And?"
"He's not answering."
Fear flickered through her eyes.
Julian noticed.
"What?"
"Nothing."
"What did you do?"
Eleanor looked away.
That told him enough.
Julian's phone rang.
He snatched it up.
His attorney's voice came through.
"I'm withdrawing."
"What?"
"My firm cannot represent you while our own accounts are being examined for potential transfers connected to Vance entities."
"You work for me."
"Not anymore."
The line went dead.
Julian stood motionless.
For the first time since childhood, his name had failed to produce obedience.
Across the room, an investigator opened a hidden cabinet behind a painting.
Eleanor stopped breathing.
Inside were paper ledgers.
Old-fashioned.
Handwritten.
Impossible to remotely erase.
Julian slowly turned toward his mother.
"What is that?"
Eleanor said nothing.
An agent lifted the first ledger from the cabinet.
Julian understood from her face that Clara's evidence had only been the beginning.
His empire wasn't merely cracking.
May you like
His mother had built explosives into the foundation.
And Clara had just lit the fuse.
