Chapter 12 - JULIAN'S LAST OFFERJulian asked to see Clara three days later.

She almost refused.

Then she changed her mind.

The meeting occurred inside a federal attorney conference room separated by thick glass.

Julian entered wearing plain detention clothing.

Without the tuxedo, the tailored suits, the assistants, and the family name surrounding him, he looked smaller.

Human.

That was almost worse.

He sat across from her.

For several seconds neither spoke.

Finally Julian leaned toward the glass.

"We can stop this."

Clara stared at him.

"How?"

"I cooperate. You soften your statement. We blame my mother and Caldwell."

"You forged my signature."

"I was under pressure."

"You emptied employee accounts."

"I replaced the money."

"You tried."

His eyes flashed.

"There you are."

"What does that mean?"

"The real Clara."

She almost laughed.

"You mean the one who says no?"

"The one who enjoys winning."

Something inside her finally broke free—not rage, but clarity.

"You still think this is about winning."

"Isn't it?"

"No."

She moved closer.

"It's about consequences."

Julian lowered his voice.

"I loved you."

Clara's expression changed.

For the first time, pain entered.

"I know."

He seemed surprised.

"That's what makes it sad."

She looked at the man she once believed would grow old beside her.

"You loved me until loving me required respecting me."

Julian looked away.

Clara stood.

He suddenly pressed a hand against the glass.

"Clara."

She stopped.

"My mother has something."

"What?"

"Something that could destroy the company."

Clara slowly turned.

"What kind of something?"

"I don't know exactly."

"Then why mention it?"

"Because she's terrified."

Julian looked directly at her.

"And my mother is never terrified unless she believes she can lose."

Clara studied his face.

"Where?"

Julian hesitated.

"The old Vance Foundation."

The same building Caldwell had mentioned.

Clara's pulse quickened.

"What is in the vault?"

May you like

Julian whispered:

"Every secret my family ever decided was too dangerous to destroy."
