Anonymous sources claimed she had manipulated Julian into signing financial documents.
A television commentator asked whether Clara had engineered the scandal to seize the company.
Marcus entered her office carrying coffee.
"Don't read the comments."
"I'm not."
She was.
Thousands of strangers had decided who she was after seeing fifteen seconds of gala footage.
Some called her brave.
Others called her calculating.
Some blamed her for being slapped.
Some blamed her for fighting back.
Clara put down the phone.
"How did Eleanor get those photographs?"
"Household server."
"Which means she planned this."
"Probably months ago."
Clara looked through the window.
"Then we don't defend my marriage."
Marcus frowned.
"What?"
"We release financial evidence."
"The legal team will hate that."
"Not sealed evidence. Audit summaries. Pension restoration numbers. Employee impact."
A smile slowly formed on Marcus's face.
"You want to change the story."
"No."
Clara stood.
"I want people to see the real one."
That afternoon she walked into a press conference without prepared remarks.
Hundreds of cameras turned toward her.
Clara gripped the podium.
"My private life is not the issue."
The room quieted.
"Whether I was a perfect wife is not the issue. Whether Julian loved me is not the issue. Whether Eleanor Vance approves of me is certainly not the issue."
A few reporters laughed.
Clara continued.
"Three thousand employees nearly lost retirement savings. Corporate records were falsified. My father's work was deliberately buried. Those are facts."
She looked directly into the cameras.
"You can dislike me and still look at the evidence."
The clip went viral within hours.
Not because Clara shouted.
Because she didn't.
And somewhere inside a federal detention facility, Eleanor Vance watched the video and understood something terrifying.
