Chapter 1 - THE NIGHT THE MASKS CAME OFFCrystal chandeliers burned like captured stars above the Grand Meridian ballroom.

Below them, senators, hedge-fund billionaires, old-money heirs, television personalities, and corporate royalty drifted across polished marble beneath a ceiling painted with angels. Champagne moved through the room on silver trays. A string quartet played beneath towering arrangements of white roses. Every detail had been designed to whisper the same message:
Power lived here.
Clara Vance stood near the center of the ballroom in a black silk gown, one hand resting lightly around a glass of champagne she had barely touched.
For six years, she had been introduced at events like this as Julian Vance's beautiful, quiet wife.
Never as Clara Whitmore.
Never as the daughter of the engineer whose patents had created nearly half the technology now hidden inside the Vance Corporation.
Never as the legal owner of thirty-eight percent of the empire.
And certainly never as the woman who had spent the last two years preparing to destroy the people smiling around her.
Julian approached through the crowd.
At forty-one, he was handsome in the polished, expensive way magazine covers loved—perfect tuxedo, silver cuff links, confident smile.
But Clara knew the man behind the photograph.
The husband who monitored her accounts.
The husband who told board members she was emotionally unstable.
The husband who forged her signature while telling her she was lucky to have married into his family.
His mother, Eleanor, followed behind him.
Eleanor Vance had spent decades convincing New York society that cruelty was simply another form of sophistication.
She stopped in front of Clara.
"You're leaving," Eleanor said quietly.
Clara smiled.
"I don't think so."
Julian's expression hardened.
"This isn't the place."
"Actually," Clara replied, "it's the perfect place."
She reached into her clutch and placed a folded document on the cocktail table.
Julian opened it.
The color disappeared from his face.
Eleanor grabbed the paper.
It was a copy of a federal preservation order covering the Vance Corporation's primary financial records.
For one second, the enormous ballroom seemed to disappear around them.
"What have you done?" Julian whispered.
Clara met his eyes.
"What you were certain I was too weak to do."
Eleanor's control snapped.
Her hand flashed across Clara's face.
The slap echoed loudly enough to turn nearby heads.
Gasps rippled through the ballroom.
Clara staggered backward.
Julian seized her wrist.
"Fix this," he hissed.
"Let go of me."
"You have no idea what you're destroying."
Clara pulled free.
Eleanor lunged toward the document. In the confusion, Clara's heel slipped against spilled champagne.
She fell hard onto the marble.
For half a second, nobody moved.
Then something changed in the room.
Dozens of phones rose.
Cameras began recording.
And Clara, lying beneath the chandeliers with a thin scratch across her cheek, started to smile.
Julian stared at her.
That smile terrified him more than anger ever could.
Clara slowly stood.
"You should've checked who was watching," she said.
The ballroom doors opened.

Three federal investigators entered.
And for the first time in his life, Julian Vance looked afraid.
