Chapter 3 - THE FALL OF WEALTHThe limousine smelled of polished leather and expensive scotch, but Clara couldn't relax.

Every muscle in her body still carried the electricity of the ballroom confrontation.

City lights streaked across the tinted windows as the car entered the expressway.

Her phone rang.

She answered immediately.

"Status."

A member of her forensic team spoke from the other end.

"Primary subsidiary accounts frozen. Federal regulators secured the central accounting servers twelve minutes ago."

"The offshore transfers?"

"Blocked."

Clara closed her eyes briefly.

"All of them?"

"Every wire request we identified."

For months, Julian and Eleanor had prepared emergency escape routes for their money.

Tonight, those doors had slammed shut.

"Employee pension funds?"

"Protected."

Only then did Clara exhale.

She touched the thin scratch Eleanor's ring had left across her cheek.

The pain meant nothing.

What mattered was that nearly three thousand employees were no longer at risk of waking up to discover their retirement savings had disappeared.

Her driver glanced into the mirror.

"Downtown penthouse, ma'am?"

"No."

"Where to?"

"Federal courthouse annex."

He hesitated.

"At this hour?"

"My legal team is waiting."

The limousine changed lanes.

Clara looked at the skyline.

For six years, those towers had represented Julian's world.

Private elevators.

Boardrooms.

Members-only clubs.

Doors opening because of a surname.

But Julian had confused access with ownership.

He had forgotten that beneath the luxury were contracts, voting rights, patents, bank records, and laws.

And laws did not care which table you occupied at charity galas.

Her phone buzzed again.

This time it was a message from Julian.

YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU'VE DONE.

A second message appeared.

CALL ME BEFORE THIS GETS WORSE.

Then another.

CLARA. PLEASE.

She stared at the screen.

For years, she had waited for that word.

Please.

Now it meant nothing.

She turned the phone facedown.

Outside, midnight Manhattan rushed past.

Behind her, the Vance empire was beginning to collapse.

Ahead of her, the real battle was about to begin.
