Chapter 30 - The Second Heartbeat Behind the Wall

Emily gasped, stumbling backward against the concrete wall, clutching her stomach in sudden, dizzying horror.

"What... what is that?" she whispered, her voice trembling violently. "Daniel, what does that mean?"

Daniel stared at the ultrasound photograph. The name printed across the top was not Emily Vance.

It was *Vanessa Sterling.*

Daniel’s mind spun into a dizzying vortex of revulsion and shock. Vanessa had claimed for months that she couldn't have children. But the medical data on the screen was dated just days before Daniel had discovered the pet collar on Mason’s neck.

"She wasn't trying to replace you, Emily," Daniel said, his voice dropping to a terrifying whisper. "Vanessa was carrying Harold’s child. If Mason was out of the picture, and Vanessa gave birth to a biological Vance heir while married to me... Harold and Diane would have owned every penny of the $140 million estate forever."

"Daddy...?" Mason’s voice suddenly echoed from the far corner of the vault.

Daniel turned instantly. Mason had walked toward a heavy steel-reinforced observation window set into the rear wall of the vault, behind a heavy velvet drape that had been pulled aside.

Mason was pressing his small hands against the reinforced glass, staring into the dark chamber beyond.

"Dad," Mason whispered, pointing through the glass. "There’s someone sleeping in there. But she looks just like the lady from the mirror."

Daniel lunged forward, shining the tactical light through the observation glass.

Inside the sterile, soundproof room on the other side of the glass was a hospital bed surrounded by hums of life-support monitors.

Lying in the bed, intubated, with wires attached to her temples and an IV drip feeding into her arm, was an exact, identical duplicate of Emily Vance.

Daniel stood frozen, his brain refusing to process the impossible sight.

He slowly turned his head to look at the woman standing beside him—the woman he had just rescued from the crawlspace, the woman who had guided them through the tunnels, the woman holding his son’s hand.

The woman beside him smiled.

The broken, trembling expression vanished entirely from her face, replaced by a cold, calculating, predatory smirk. Her posture straightened. Her eyes, once full of tears, turned pitch black with triumphant amusement.

"You really should have checked the dental records yourself, Daniel," she whispered in a voice that was no longer raspy, but smooth, sharp, and razor-cold.

*CLANG.*

Behind them, the four-ton vault door slammed violently shut with the deafening hiss of pneumatic pressure locks sealing the chamber airtight.

From the overhead intercom system, the voice of Harold Vance crackled through the static:

*"Meet Chloe, Daniel. Emily’s twin sister... the one we kept hidden until tonight."*

Chloe reached behind her back, her fingers wrapping around the handle of a ceramic scalpel hidden in her dress, and took a step toward Mason.

"Say goodbye to your son, Daniel."
