Chapter 28 - The Fingerprint on the Cold Glass

Daniel raised his weapon, aiming directly at the wooden ceiling planks.
"Get under the cot, now," Daniel mouthed silently to Emily.
Emily grabbed Mason, sliding him under the heavy oak frame and shielding his small body with hers. Daniel stepped backward toward the center of the room, every sense heightened, his finger resting lightly on the trigger.
*Thump.*
A heavy thud sounded on the cabin’s tin roof, followed by the slow, deliberate crunch of boots moving across the metal corrugated sheets.
Then, a metallic object dropped through the brick chimney, rolling across the stone hearth into the center of the room.
It was not a grenade.
It was a silver locket.
Daniel kept his gun trained on the ceiling while keeping his eyes on the hearth. The locket had popped open on impact. Inside rested a miniature photograph: Emily holding newborn Mason in the hospital room seven years ago.
Across the glass of the photo, written in fresh, crimson lipstick, was a single word:
*RUN.*
Before Daniel could process the message, a deafening explosion shattered the cabin’s front wall. Timber and drywall disintegrated into splinters as a black-clad operative breached through the doorway, tactical shotgun raised.
Daniel fired three consecutive rounds from his .45. The heavy hollow-point slugs hit the operative’s body armor with sledgehammer force, driving him backward out into the dirt.
A second shooter leaned through the broken window, but before he could fire, Emily lunged from the shadows, driving an iron fire poker straight through the gunman’s shoulder. The man screamed, dropping his assault rifle into the room.
Daniel grabbed the fallen rifle, kicked the door shut, and fired a suppressing burst into the darkness outside. Two more figures retreated into the trees.
"That wasn't Harold’s strike team," Daniel breathed, looking at the dead man on the porch. He stripped off the operative's balaclava.
The man was young, with a distinct tattoo on his neck: a coiled serpent wrapping around an anchor—the mark of a private mercenary syndicate operating out of Eastern Europe.
"They're not here to take Mason alive," Daniel realized with chilling clarity. "Harold isn't trying to control the trust anymore. He’s liquidating everyone. If Mason and Emily are both dead before midnight, the entire trust defaults to Diane Sterling as the surviving family executor."
Daniel knelt by the locket on the hearth. He picked it up with a piece of cloth.
On the back of the silver casing was a fresh, bloody thumbprint.
A small, delicate thumbprint with a distinct diagonal scar across the pad.
"Vanessa," Daniel whispered, stunned. "This is Vanessa’s locket."
Emily stepped forward, her face pale. "Vanessa is in county lockup, Daniel. You put her there."
May you like
"She escaped," Daniel said, his eyes narrowing as he stared out into the black woods. "Or someone let her out to be the bait."
