Chapter 15 - The Prison Visit He Swore He Would Never Make

The visitor's booth at Bedford Hills smelled of industrial floor stripper, cold grease, and institutional despair.

Daniel sat behind the scratched, bulletproof Plexiglas partition, his jaw set like granite. Across from him, the steel door buzzed. A corrections officer escorted Vanessa inside.

She wore the drab, oversized forest-green jumpsuit of a maximum-security state inmate. Her manicured acrylic nails were gone, replaced by bitten, ragged edges. The honey-blonde salon blowout was limp, pulled back in a severe, greasy ponytail. But the moment she sat down and lifted the black plastic telephone receiver, her eyes flared with that familiar, sociopathic arrogance that made Daniel’s blood turn to sulfuric acid.

Daniel picked up his receiver. He didn't speak. He waited.

Vanessa smiled. Her teeth were slightly stained from cheap prison coffee, but the venom behind the grin was undiluted.

"Did you get the crate, Danny?" she purred into the phone. "I told Victoria to use the express courier. You always did appreciate prompt deliveries."

"Victoria approached Mason at his school today," Daniel said, his voice terrifyingly quiet. "If she takes one more step toward my son, she won't be arrested, Vanessa. She will disappear."

Vanessa threw her head back and laughed—a harsh, grating sound that drew the eye of the armed guard standing near the doorway.

"You always were so wonderfully dramatic, Daniel. The righteous architect! The protective father! It’s pathetic. You still think you’re in a domestic dispute." She leaned forward, pressing her forehead against the scratched plastic until her breath fogged the glass. "You think I wanted your sniveling, defective brat? You think I enjoyed pretending to love a broken widower who cried into his pillow every time it rained?"

"You wanted Emily's trust," Daniel stated.

"I wanted what was owed to my family!" Vanessa hissed, her mask of polished civility shattering completely. "Thirty years ago, your father—the great, incorruptible Judge Arthur Sterling—sent my father to Attica for corporate embezzlement while Arthur embezzled thirty million dollars from the Van Dorn timber accounts! Arthur stole our lives! He drove my father to hang himself in a holding cell!"

Daniel stared at her, the dark puzzle pieces snapping together into a grotesque tapestry.

"Emily discovered it," Vanessa whispered, her eyes glowing with unhinged malice. "Sweet, perfect Emily went through Arthur’s private safe at the lake cabin. She found the forged trust indentures. She was going to blow Arthur’s world apart. So Arthur made a deal with my mother. He told Diane: *'Take care of Emily, make it look clean, marry your daughter to Daniel, and the Van Dorn trust belongs to you.'*"

"You're lying," Daniel growled, though his stomach plunged into an abyss.

"Am I?" Vanessa laughed, tapping the glass with a jagged fingernail. "Why don't you ask your father where he was at 10:00 PM on August 14 five years ago? Ask him why his Mercedes was seen speeding away from Blackwood Basin thirty minutes before Emily’s car went over the rail. Arthur didn't just know about the collar, Danny. Arthur bought it. He told Diane that if Mason wasn't legally institutionalized before his eighth birthday, Emily’s real will would be unsealed by the state probate court."

She leaned in closer, whispering against the mic:

"Four days, Daniel. On Friday, Mason turns eight. And Victoria has already filed the emergency petition with Arthur's former bench."
