Chapter 22 - The Autopsy Report That Had No Name

The glass in the living room shattered before Daniel could even register the sound.
A high-velocity tear-gas canister ricocheted off the ceiling, bouncing across the hardwood floor and spewing a thick, sulfurous white smoke into the living room. Mason shrieked, burying his face deeper into Daniel’s chest.
"Move! Bedroom, now!" Daniel roared.
He didn't wait to see who was in the SUV. He lunged down the hallway, kicking open the master bedroom door, dragging Mason with him into the shadows. Emily stood paralyzed near the walk-in closet, her trembling hands clawing at the wall.
"The back patio window," Daniel barked, coughing through the rising fumes. "Emily! Can you run?"
Emily stared at him, her eyes wide with terror, then snapped into motion. She lunged into the closet, hitting a hidden latch behind the shoe rack that Daniel had never known existed. The back panel swung open, revealing the crawlspace beneath the house's foundation—an old root cellar converted into an escape route.
"Through here," Emily rasped, her hand shaking as she reached out. For a split second, her fingers brushed Mason’s shoulder.
Mason gasped, peeking out from Daniel’s arms. "Mommy...?"
Emily’s face crumpled with profound agony. Tears carved lines through the dust on her pale cheeks. "I’m sorry, baby. Mommy had to stay dead to keep you breathing."
Heavy bootsteps smashed through the shattered front window. Shouts in clipped, tactical military cadence echoed through the living room: *"Clear left! Target secured in hallway! Non-lethal on the child, neutralize the male!"*
Daniel shoved Mason into the crawlspace first. "Crawl, Mason! Don't look back until you see the daylight under the porch!"
He turned to grab Emily, but she thrust an manila envelope into his chest. It was thick, stamped with red official seals, and smelled of formaldehyde and damp earth.
"Take it," Emily urged, her voice trembling with urgent desperation. "The girl in the lake wasn't me. It was Victoria’s secret daughter—the real mother Vanessa tried to erase. Read the DNA page, Daniel! Arthur didn't want Mason’s trust fund... Mason isn't Arthur’s grandson. He’s the heir to the Vance Empire!"
Daniel shoved the envelope into his jacket as the bedroom door was kicked violently off its hinges.

A masked operative in unmarked black tactical gear filled the doorway, weapon raised. Daniel didn't hesitate. He grabbed the antique floor lamp beside the dresser and drove the heavy brass base straight into the operative’s visor. The glass cracked, the man stumbled backward with a muffled curse, and Daniel dropped into the dark crawlspace, pulling the wooden false wall shut just as a burst of suppressed gunfire ripped through the bedroom closet.
