Chapter 21 - The Woman in the Mirror Closet

The hallway air turned subzero in an instant. Daniel’s breath caught in his throat, a sharp, suffocating knot tightening around his windpipe. Down the narrow corridor, Mason stood framed by the warm yellow light of the guest bathroom, his small fingers clutching a damp hand towel, his eyes wide and trembling.

"Dad...?" Mason whimpered again, his voice cracking like thin ice. "She has Mommy’s hair. Why is she standing in the dark?"

Daniel didn't think. Instinct, forged through weeks of terror and fatherly vigilance, overrode every ounce of paralyzing shock. He crossed the hardwood floor in three violent strides, scooped Mason into his left arm, and tucked the boy’s head firmly into his collarbone.

"Close your eyes, buddy," Daniel whispered, his voice trembling beneath forced steel. "Keep them closed. Don't look."

Daniel spun on his heel, his free hand instinctively reaching for the heavy oak cutting board on the kitchen counter—his gun was sitting in an evidence locker at the federal airfield. He gripped the polished wood, his knuckles white, and retreated toward the heavy front door, shielding Mason behind his back.

He looked toward the master bedroom at the end of the hall.

The heavy mahogany door was cracked open just three inches. The interior of the bedroom was pitch black, shades drawn against the midday sun. But within that sliver of darkness, something shifted. A slender, pale hand emerged from the shadows, resting gently against the white doorframe. Wrapped around the wrist was a vintage silk scarf—patterned with faded blue forget-me-nots.

Daniel’s blood turned to liquid nitrogen.

He had bought that scarf in Paris on their honeymoon seven years ago. He had watched Emily wrap it around her neck on the morning she drove away—the morning her sedan plunged into Blackwood Lake. They had recovered the wreckage. They had buried a waterlogged casket.

"Emily?" Daniel choked out, the word tearing raw from his throat.

The figure stepped forward into the hallway’s natural light.

It was not a ghost. It was flesh, bone, and living breath. Her cheekbones were sunken, her skin ghost-pale and crisscrossed with faint surgical scars along the jawline, but the emerald-green eyes were unmistakably Emily’s. She wore a faded gray linen dress, hanging loosely off her gaunt frame.

Yet her gaze wasn't warm. It was fractured, vacant, and haunted by unspeakable horrors.

"She... she told me you wouldn't come back," the woman whispered. Her voice was cracked, raspy, as if vocal cords had been dormant for years. "Victoria said you sold Mason. She said you bought another boy."

"Emily... oh God, Emily, look at me," Daniel breathed, stepping forward, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. "It’s me. It’s Daniel. Victoria is in handcuffs. The FBI took them all."

At the sound of Daniel’s voice, the woman’s eyes flashed with sudden, terrifying lucidity. She looked down at the titanium collar resting on the kitchen island behind Daniel, then toward Mason, whose small frame trembled against Daniel’s chest.

A look of sheer horror warped her face.

"No," she gasped, backing into the bedroom darkness. "You don't understand, Daniel. Victoria was just the caretaker. The buyer... the buyer is already outside."

Before Daniel could move, the sound of heavy tires crunched across the gravel driveway outside. Through the living room picture window, the sleek silhouette of a black armored SUV pulled to a dead stop, its engine rumbling like distant thunder.
