Chapter 8 - Unbreakable Alliances

The next forty-eight hours were a blur of high-stakes maneuvering.
The Volkov penthouse became a war room. Senior capos, financial analysts, and legal advisors poured in and out at all hours of the night. Dmitri’s threat had placed Damian in a deadly corner: if he fought his uncle openly, the Syndicate council would view it as a civil war and intervene; if he stayed quiet, Dmitri would slander his mother at the upcoming summit.
I refused to sit on the sidelines.
While Damian managed the military operations of his family, I used my unique position to gather intelligence. Using my background as a hospitality worker who had served Manhattan’s elite for years, I remembered every whisper, every secret, and every private conversation held by wealthy patrons over champagne glasses at the Hargrove Hotel.
"Sofia, what are you looking for?" Damian asked late at night, finding me in the penthouse library surrounded by financial spreadsheets.
"Dmitri mentioned he controls the European shipping routes," I said, pointing to a ledger on the desk. "Three months ago, while serving a dinner for the Port Authority commissioners at the hotel, I overheard a shipping executive named Vane talking about illegal docks in New Jersey. He mentioned a silent partner with the initials 'D.V.'"
Damian leaned over the desk, his face inches from mine as he studied the document. "Dmitri doesn't own those routes. He’s leasing them through a shell company registered in Panama."
"And if we shut down that shell company before the summit..." I began.
"...Dmitri loses his leverage over the council," Damian finished my sentence, a look of profound amazement spreading across his face. He looked at me, his gray eyes burning with admiration. "You found the key, Sofia. In forty-eight hours, you did what my entire intelligence team couldn't."
"I told you," I smiled softly. "People ignore waitresses. We hear everything."
Damian reached out, taking my hand in his. His grip was strong, steady, and warm. "Sofia... when this is over, I don't want you to be my executive assistant."
I hesitated, my heart pounding. "What do you want me to be?"
May you like
"My equal," Damian said, stepping closer until there was no space left between us. "In every sense of the word."
He leaned down, his lips meeting mine in a deep, passionate kiss that made the rest of the world melt away. For the first time in my life, I wasn't fighting for survival—I was fighting for a future with a man I had grown to deeply love.
