Chapter 6 - Shadows of the Past

The victory at the financial center made national headlines. Overnight, the media transformed me from an unknown waitress into a symbol of courage and grace under pressure. Social media exploded with support, coining the hashtag #StandWithSofia.

However, in the world of organized crime, every victory invites a bigger enemy.

That evening, Damian hosted an intimate dinner at the penthouse to celebrate his mother's improving health. Elena sat at the head of the table, laughing as Marco told her stories about his school robotics club. For the first time in years, I felt a sense of peace settling over my heart.

After dinner, I stepped out onto the glass balcony to catch the cool night air. The city lights stretched out beneath me like a carpet of diamonds.

"You handled the press conference exceptionally well today, Sofia," a quiet voice spoke from behind me.

I turned to see Damian standing near the doorway, holding two glasses of sparkling water. He walked over, handing one to me, and rested his forearms on the balcony railing.

"I was terrified," I admitted, taking a small sip. "My hands were shaking under my sleeves."

"No one could tell," Damian said, looking at me with an intensity that made my heart skip a beat. "You have a rare kind of strength, Sofia. You don't try to dominate people; you simply refuse to bow."

I looked at his sharp profile against the city lights. "Why are you doing all this, Damian? You solved the Vale problem, but you're still keeping us here. You're still protecting my family."

Damian stared out into the dark horizon. "Because the Vales were just small fish, Sofia. My father's old enemies are watching me closely. When you stepped in to save my mother, you showed the entire underworld that Elena Volkov had a vulnerability. They think you are my weak spot."

My breath caught. "Am I?"

Damian slowly turned his head to face me. He reached out, his long fingers gently tucking a stray lock of hair behind my ear. His touch was warm, sending a shiver through my spine.

"You aren't my weak spot, Sofia," he murmured, his voice dropping an octave. "You are becoming my priority."

Before I could process his words, a loud metallic thud echoed from the hallway inside the penthouse.

Damian’s posture shifted instantly. The gentle warmth in his eyes vanished, replaced by lethal focus. He pulled a silver handgun from his shoulder holster and pushed me behind his back.

"Stay behind me," he ordered softly.

We stepped back inside the penthouse. The grand living room was dark. The security team stationed at the doors were all unconscious on the floor, knocked out by high-potency sleep gas.

Standing near the center of the room was a tall man in a dark tailored suit, leaning calmly on a wooden cane. His hair was silver, his eyes cold and reptilian.

"Hello, Damian," the man spoke, his voice dripping with venom. "It's been a long time."

Damian’s jaw tightened into a hard line. "Dmitri Volkov."

"Your uncle," the man smiled coldly, glancing toward me. "And I see you've brought a pretty little waitress into our family business."
