Chapter 3 - The Gilded Cage

The Volkov penthouse occupied the top three floors of a towering glass skyscraper overlooking Central Park. It was a palace of black marble, brushed steel, and floor-to-ceiling glass that offered a panoramic view of Manhattan's shimmering skyline. But to me, it felt like a fortress designed to keep the world out—or keep its occupants in.

While Marco was shown to a spacious guest room equipped with a state-of-the-art entertainment system, I was escorted to the second floor, where Elena Volkov’s private medical suite was located.

The room was warm, filled with the scent of fresh white lilies and old books. Elena sat near a grand bay window, wrapped in a plush cashmere shawl, reading a leather-bound book. When she saw me enter, her tired face instantly lit up with a genuine smile.

"Sofia," she said, setting her book aside. "I was hoping Damian wouldn't terrify you into running away."

"He tried," I said gently, walking over and taking a seat on the armchair beside her. "But I'm harder to shake off than he thinks."

Elena chuckled softly, a sound that ended in a slight, raspy cough. "That is precisely why he brought you here. My son is surrounded by men who say 'yes' to everything he utters. He forgets that the world contains people who aren't afraid of his name."

"Who is he, really?" I asked softly, looking around the opulent room. "In the ballroom, people looked at him like he was a ghost."

Elena’s expression grew serious. She rested her frail hands over mine. "Damian took over the Volkov Syndicate when his father was murdered five years ago. He was twenty-six. The other families thought he was too young, too refined, too weak. They tried to tear our empire apart."

She paused, looking out at the glittering lights of the city. "Damian ended that war in three weeks. He didn't use bombs or street fights. He bought their debts, seized their assets, and exposed their deepest secrets to the authorities. He earned the title 'The Architect.' He controls Chicago, New York, and half of Miami. But in doing so, he locked his heart behind iron doors."

The door behind us swung open quietly. Damian stepped inside, carrying a tablet computer. He looked at his mother, his eyes instantly softening in a way that seemed completely foreign to the cold man I had met earlier.

"How are you feeling, Mother?" he asked, kneeling beside her wheelchair.

"Better, now that Sofia is here," Elena said, patting his cheek. "She has more sense than your entire security detail."

Damian raised an eyebrow, shifting his gaze to me. "Speaking of security... the Vale family just held an emergency press conference."

He tapped the tablet screen and turned it toward us.

On the screen stood Cassandra Vale alongside her father, Arthur Vale, a powerful real estate mogul with slicked-back gray hair and a sharp navy suit. Cassandra was dabbing tears from her eyes, looking fragile and deeply distressed.

"My daughter was publicly assaulted and humiliated tonight at the Hargrove Hotel by an unhinged staff member," Arthur Vale declared into a cluster of news microphones. "Furthermore, Damian Volkov used his criminal influence to intimidate my family. We are filing a formal lawsuit and demanding a full police investigation into the Volkov organization!"

I felt a cold drop of sweat trace down my spine. "She's twisting everything."

"Of course she is," Damian said smoothly, standing up. "It’s what desperate people do when they realize they’ve lost control of the narrative."

"What are you going to do?" I asked.

Damian locked his gray eyes onto mine, a faint, dangerous smile playing at the corners of his lips. "I’m going to ruin them. And you, Sofia, are going to help me."
